The kick-off for a great trip through Germany last summer. It was a legal visit, we gave some cash to the old caretaker who lives in his caravan next to the front gate and we could do our thing for a few hours. He told us that he normally lends visitors a key so that they can exit by themselves when they are done but apparently the last visitors had stolen the key. He decided to let us in and in the mean time drive to the nearest city to have it copied. A slight language barrier didn't make things easy but we agreed that he would be back to open the main gate and let us out at 10 am. So we left the building at 10.00 and walked to the main gate but there was no caretaker to be found. We started taking exterior photos to kill time but after waiting half an hour we started to get nervous. Had the old man locked us in and forgot about us? Did we not understand him right? There was a seriously high wall surrounding the grounds but we decided to see if there was a way out just in case. We actually found a small loophole just big enough to squeeze through. We decided to walk to the main gate one more time to see if the man was there, and if not we'd arrange our great escape. The gate was still firmly closed. I remember saying "let's do it, but it will be damn embarrassing if he arrives while we are heading for our car." And of course, the last person is squeezing through the hole and there comes mr. caretaker driving up to the main gate, 45 minutes too late. He didn't see us but I felt like the right thing to do was to walk up to him and honestly tell him that we climbed out because we thought that he'd forgot us. It was embarrassing all over, he looked very confused and a bit insulted. I awkwardly shook his hand, thanked him for the visit and off we went. Looking back it's quite funny. Maybe the whole illegal thing works better for us
