Ideal qualities of a location

What would you say are your ideal qualities of a location and what do you look for and value in general when forming an opinion about one?
I think for me it's probably how unique it is from other locations I've explored and how much there is to explore and see. Some of my favorite places are those I can come back to and find something new I haven't yet seen.
I was going to say ease of access too but on second thought more challenging locations always feel more rewarding.
What do you guys think?

Difficulty
Exclusivity
History
State
Age

The more difficult the location is and the more people want to do it and the more history it has, that's what is a good location for me.

It always depend on the said location, some are pure challenge, other are purely because it's historical or of the beauty of the place.
Other are because of how much untouched they are.

Peole have all different tastes too, example houses, even if it's old and have relics from the 30's in it, i dont give a shit.

I might add photogenicity, for lack of a legitimate word. And maybe remoteness, which combines with difficulty and exclusivity. Plus, notable for my area, amount of objects left behind.

For me it the list would go as follows: condition, photogenic properties, difficulty, and history.

I am not saying there are no exceptions, but generally if a location is trashed its photogenic properties will be lacking. And trashed locations for the most part are not very difficult. I probably should put difficulty higher on the list, if for no other reason than it really can go a long way to keeping a "good" location "good".

This is a tricky question. I've visited "perfect" locations but some just doesn't stay in my memory as good as some simple ruins. Location becomes perfect if it's associated with a good mood or adventures which are related with location.
anyway....
*It must smell good!!! Apart from visuals, it must be remarkable in some other way.
*It must be far from "civilization". For me it's stressful when i know that ANYBODY who's walking the street could enter the location. For example, it's a very little possibility that a junkie would show up in the middle of a forest, right?
*It's changing. In a good way. Hmm. I'm excited to find beautiful graffitis inside abandoned factories i've explored for several times. For me it's also very exciting if the location has been seen very differently from different photographers or the location is visible in music videos or movies and art projects. Yeah. Definitely. Concerts! Hell yeah! Any place, really, any abandoned place becomes a totally different experience when someone throws there a real concert.
*It must look epic on maps or aerial views. Maps are porno. Especially if it's possible to switch aerial photos from 90's to nowadays and observe how location has changed or not. For example, in winter time i choose not to do risky explorations and i rather explore online maps. Sounds dorky but maps are very essential thing, that's how most of my explorations begins with.
*Location should be accessible both illegally and legally. For example there must be an option to meet a person who can tell lots of "shit" and history.
*Misteries!!! Location should have at least one locked room, one secret tunnel or something like that. It's a big quality, if there's a thing that you never find out and keep on wondering.

+ all the stuff explorers mentioned above

1. Locations with undisturbed contents
2. Certain types of architecture
3. Historical significance
4. Unknown/lesser-known locations

I haven't been to very many secluded locations since I'm pretty new to exploring but the seclusion and exclusivity definitely does sound like it would add a lot to the experience (after all, hasn't exploring always been about discovery?)

A place that is:

  • expansive/complex
  • relatively safe

And there, I seem to be satisfied; it could be a lack of experience, or just a more general attachment to concrete from my moscow childhood, but cold, soviet realist, cold war-looking architecture absolutely turns me on.

Yeah for sure photogenicity is on the top of what we research!

Sometimes the location itself will add to the pictures, even if the picture is not the best shot.
Example picture taken on landmarks where just an handful of people had the balls to go.

I refuse categoricaly to explore with permission because it remove all the fun.
It's like going in a museum where everyone can go and take pictures...meh.

I am a map dork as well! This is definitely how I find the large majority of my locations.

I like this one! I had never thought of it this way, but yes, you're right about the "misteries," lol

I also love the mystery of putting the pieces together that will eventually tell me the story of how this location came to be. A location with a good story is a huge bonus.

My ideal location?

I'm on the other end of the spectrum from being drawn by difficult/exclusive places. I mean, I love the idea of breaking new ground, really stumbling onto something that nobody or very few people have seen but... nothing's original, right? And as far as ease of access goes... and I'm sure I wouldn't be here if I wasn't fascinated by the weird beauty of all those huge industrial wrecks that you see. But, I enjoy myself a lot more when I'm not anxious about getting caught and constantly looking over my shoulder, and those places tend to be blighted spots in the middle of nothing that truly nobody cares about. /shrug

What I want is evidence of the personal connection people had to a place. Stuff left over, things that construct a story. Places that are structurally intact enough for me to go in and really poke around in the corners, areas that haven't been cleared out, some moment arrested in ruin. That's what D likes.

All of these are such great reasons to be drawn to a place. I will only add that, for me, a stop that is totally unlike what I imagined from the outside is ideal. My two favorite places are so beyond what you would would expect from the street level view.

My favorite qualities to find in a location are:

- Secluded/private. I like being able to talk and laugh without worrying about being overheard or seen by nosy onlookers.

- Not too decrepit. Squishy, decomposing floors, bowing ceilings... not my cup of tea.

- Probably the most important for me: stuff! I hate when you get inside a place and it's been completely looted/cleared out. Empty hallways and bare rooms don't hold a lot of appeal to me, it's the weird little relics all over that give a place charm and character to me, and they're just plain fun to sift through and look at.
