I guess in some ways this goes mainly to Raticus and Ophelia .... I m trying to find some info on the old Carlton Hotel Downtown, wondered if being the local Tyler folks you have any good info. Not necessarily looking for POE or anything like that, more if you have been in and the condition. I have seen a few articles that the city/county was using it until a couple years ago, (see article) but looking at some of the pics seems it is in rougher shape than people are letting on. Trying to set up to tour it in the next week or so but its amazing what info I can find out from folks here on what some of the real issues on buildings are! It's a hell of a buy if actually in as good as shape structurally s they are saying. Shoot me a note if anyone has been in it or has any info.

I can give you plenty of information on this building. The Carlton is being put up for sale in the next month, they are doing some things (the county) to try to make it more appealing to a buyer. The county did use the building for offices up until a couple of years ago. Parts of it, particularly the old swimming pool area, are in very bad condition. I have not personally been inside it but I know the reporter and photographer who went inside for that article.

The problem I would be wary of about accessing it now is that it is still powered, still alarmed, and still accessed from time to time by the county. Access to it may be possible, but I honestly don't know. I've walked around it, scouted it a little bit, but have never found a place that would lend itself to easy access.

It still has active (as far as I know) security cameras on the premises and in the parking garage, which is always lit. The building is one that I want to gain access to, but so far I haven't felt as though it was worth the risk.

Bottom line, the building is vacant, but it is far from abandoned. If you come to Tyler, let me know. I work two blocks from the building.

yup 2x, I see another Statler in the Horizon except I think me an a couple friends may make a run at this one ourselves lol.

I have a meeting with the city of Terrell Tuesday and am trying to get legit access to spend a few hours inside it either after my meetings there or later. I wish I had come across it before they decided to turn it over to a Real Estate company. That wont do anything but add a hundred grand to the price

Thanks for the feedback Raticus, I had a feeling it was armed after visiting last weekend. It looked like there were quite a few cameras an alarms. As for condition, what ive seen doesnt look all that bad as far as compared to some i have worked on! Not as good as condition as the statler was but it would all get ripped out anyway! I'll keep you posted, I can always use a backup cameraman as I sometimes get foucsed on construction things and dont catch it all.

I'm in Tyler (well, technically Atlanta then Carthage), for tonight and tomorrow. I've been out this way several times in the last year, but haven't found/spent a lot of time in Tyler. My interest is definitely piqued!

Sorry for being a bit MIA, lots going on trying to wrap up a project so not to much time for getting in to this. However, I have spoke to the county and tenatively set up to go spend a day inside going through the building as well as talked to a couple of Architects who have done some surveys of the building. All have told me generally it has some parts in really good shape an others in really bad shape. This one is actually looking to be more of a possible restoration project than just an explore and have a couple people interested in it, hence the main reason for doing things on the up n up than just trying to get in. Shooting for end of month or first of the month to do the tour.

Whats had me slammed lately, almost done putting it back together ....

Well congrats. I guess this is a prime example of what some may call "social engineering". I am, however, curious about this. How exactly are you getting the people to show you the place? Something along of lines of "I really really want to see it inside " doesn't seem like would so I wonder...

Well not really but I will tell you that you would be surprised at how often that will work. Just strike up a conversation with someone explain you love photographing buildings and history etc ... many times people will let you in to take a few shots.

In my case, I am a general contractor and have done a good deal of historical renovation and usually can leverage my company, experience and contacts to get in. It also never hurts that I have a client base that many times are actually interested in some of the buildings and I truly need to get in an inspect the property to determine if it can be put back in to use at a reasonable cost or in some cases just needs to be torn down, sadly, some just can't be saved from a financial perspective. Thats how I got 2x an myself in to the Statler Hilton in Dallas when no one could get in. I went on to handle minor repairs and maintenance for several years for the China owners as well as helped work on the sale.
