The Activities Building

This is one of those locations that I had know about for quite some time but had "written it off" as being to difficult/risky to access and because it appears quite uninteresting from the outside.

I first heard about this place from my neighbor. It's less than 10 minutes from my house. The building in this set, which I have dubbed the "activities" building is just one of quite a few buildings abandoned in a large campus ran by the state. Built to house and treat those with developmental disabilities. This building has one wing of classrooms, which are pretty much completely cleared out and the rest was used as a recreational center.

The campus still has a few active buildings, including a hospital in the center. On a weekday the place is quite busy, but on the Sunday morning we went we had the place pretty much to ourselves. Save a few joggers and dog walkers.

The power is still on in here, which came in handy when shooting the surprise we found in the basement.

Despite being 75%+ cleared out, this place still has a ton of cool surprises to offer up. Including probably the most mint and intact set of projectors you are likely to find in any abandonment. Hope you guys enjoy the set!

You are my guide
You are my light
You take me to a place where I can shine

Your tears don't fall
They crash around me

I wish I was a little bit taller
I wish I was a baller

Four quartets and no regrets
Except for the Polaroids I left

Peerless

I could watch you for a lifetime
You're my favorite movie

Projections of the Past

*A side note on the projectors: I sent many photos of them to a friend of mine who is very familiar with old movie equipment and has ran ones like this. He said they appear 100% complete and he could have a movie up and running on them in 10 minutes with power. Ironically this room and the gymnasium/theater below it seem to be the only spots in the whole building without power.

Faked our deaths
Lit a match
Closed the door
Waited for the flash

One of these things just doesn't belong

Nice set man, disappointed I couldn't make it in. Wonder how long before those projectors are gutted.

Thanks for all the love everyone!! Usually I prefer places with a bit more decay. But it was a nice change exploring a place that was still in such great shape.

There is always next time bud. I think the projectors are safe for awhile. The place is well off the radar and, as you saw, on a still quite active campus.
Looks like some local kids have been in there, but that's about it. I believe myself and the friend I first explored this place with are the first one to shoot those projectors. Possibly the first ones to be up in that room since the place closed

Thanks man!! I stayed out of the pool. Lifeguard was not on duty after all. Always follow all the pool rules!

Thank you so much Mis!! The first shot turned out WAY better than I had anticipated. One of my personal favorite shots of the year.

That's the plan. The place is so close to my house that return trips will be a necessity. It's the sort of place I will need to chip away at a bit at a time. There are many buildings on the property. The other two I have been in were quite gutted and boring. I have heard there are tunnels connecting many of the buildings. If I can find access to those that would be a huge help.

I forgot about the happenings in the projection room, it was so weird you describing hearing strange noises when up in that room and then the exact same thing happened when I was there with you guys as well. Very odd.

Beautiful set but too new for my interest. Excellent coverage though.

Yea the source of the noise is still a mystery. But what we heard was the same as what me and Dan heard on our first trip. Freaked us out a bit. Same noise coming from the same direction and at the same intervals. Weird for sure.

Thanks Edster! Normally I prefer more decay in my abandonments as well. But the number of cool finds in this place more than made up for it.
