I didn't get to go anything too major while up north for the holiday, but I did spend an afternoon driving around documenting some of the cool little places around my hometown:
1.) A hydroelectric plant very close to my house. Still active, but this was one of the first places I went after joining this site, so I wanted to go back and get at least one decent shot of it.
2.) Across the road from the plant is this little cottage, known affectionately as the "High-Tide Hilton". It's a cute building in a great spot, and it'd be cool to live in, if the back end weren't slowly sinking into the bay.
3.)
Right next to the Hilton is Mulligan's smokehouse, which may not technically be abandoned, but I've seen it in use exactly once since I've lived there.
4.) The next two shots are from a weird little grouping of overgrown small houses, barns and other outbuildings, known only as the Shed Collection. I've never been able to get a definite story about this place from anyone in town, just that apparently it was a guy's collection of sheds. It certainly appears to be an architectural salvage venture of some sort, but everything's so decayed that it's now nothing more than an eerie little local mystery.
5.)
6.) This place was my only real new find, a lonely white house on top of a hill, surrounded by meadows. Another one that would be great to fix up and occupy.
7.)
8.) Lastly, I couldn't resist stopping by this place again. I took some shots of the interior over the summer and posted them here, and I was glad to see that it hasn't changed a bit, except that it seems that the garage is being used for occasional storage.
Most Maine winter days are gloomy and soggy, as you see here. I find that the atmosphere nicely complements the little rural ruins that pepper the state, and make the back roads so enticing.
Thanks for looking!
