Found another relevant treasure deep in the internet archives...

And yet another...

And I found this. Old, simple, effective.

Note: Under stress the neck can be hard to land, the hip can be alternately targeted.
It's important to put all your weight behind the strike.

But God help you if you encounter an armed animal.

I've seen some things man.. and some stuff.

Over there in that pigpen, I found a couple of Shoshoni arrowheads.

I myself had this question in the back of my head when I first started. I had the miss-preconception that every abandoned place would have a thief hiding in there. The more I explored the less I believed it. But, this just reassured me even more. So, Thank you.

I always wondered if there was a comic strip on UER and now I must find the rest.

Here's the link to the first comic of the Buttram Manfist series.

http://buttram.uer.ca/v.asp?id=3197

Unfortunately, don't expect any updates, well... ever. The last comic was posted in 2012, and it looks like Captain_Slow hasn't been on UER for a couple of years now. So the Buttram saga is pretty much over.

If you know what you're doing you can actually kill someone with a pen (however, it needs to be a good pen, not a bic) That being said, same can be done with a rolled up magazine and quite a few seemingly innocuous household items. I carry a small pocket knife on me as an edc but it's a tool and not a weapon unless it's used as a last resort.

This guy seems to understand the dangers. So how about something happened like you got caught in something and need to cut it? Oh well I don't carry a knife because ITS DANGEROUS not at all like going into an unsafe structure filled with literally and here it comes....Nobody knows what?!
So the argument I hear now is "Well take a look at the place! If you think it may have occupants then dont go!"
SPLENDID! That all you long time adventures have 1. X-ray Vision so you can see through most places and tell that nobody is there! And also if you did somehow (with all your guys NINJA moves that dont need any weapons of any kind) manage to encounter somebody dangerous dont worry! You obviously know 100% you can run away from them because you know 100% you are faster, or lol even better you dont need any weapons(even though its part of the bare essentials and one of the first things you learn about Urbex) because you can take em in a fist fight!

Most of you calling me Rambo, well you sure make yourselves sound badass!
"I dont need a weapon, I can easily tell from outside this location that absolutely NOBODY is in this place right now!"

And I really really love the folks here making it sound like I am packing an arsenal with me with guns, knives tactical whatever....when in my post I said I would just carry a normal pen with me because it can stab just fine(go ahead try it on yourself and tell me its not effective at all)

I really appreciate everyone who took the time to actually answer the valid question I had instead of bitching me out.....for a pen.

And on one last note: I never Urbex alone as a rule of safety. We do things like this because it keeps us safe in a certain mindset. Its not ATTACK!!!! its FUCKING SURVIVE! When with a team military lingo works because meanings and definitions can be shortened, learning how to clear a room JUST IN CASE is a skill you can take outside of Urbex. Learning about all the environmental hazards and how to read warning labels specifying a chemical, explosive substance can also be very helpful inside Urbex and out.

I am happy so many people here are brave enough to 1. Go alone, 2 Go without any single kind of self defense tool other than their own hands.

Urbex has NO rules. Its an anarchic activity by every definition.

Those of you who want to do things your way, cool! thats your choice! Their can be consequences!
Some people like me do it another way, whether for safety, whether because we like doing it the way we do it because its fun! and we all know their are consequences for everything we do too.
None of you have any room to tell anyone who does this how to do it.

So if you cant seem to stick the topic of the thread i cant do shit but listen to opinions here. Some of you have absolutely great points and some just seem like an attack on a new member here.

GEEWIZ I sure would love to post all the locations I have discovered not documented on here....but I have to be a full member to do so....like what do you want me to freaking do?

I find this to be a valid idea. I have only done this a year and been to 3 out of 7 locations that I would even think to bring a weapon of some kind. I am just trying to cover all my bases and have a plan.

Its still silly to think I wont ever need a pocket knife for these places. Its a tool with many purposes other than hurting/killing.

What if I get snagged on something and I need to cut it away? What if get wounded and need to use my knife as a tool for medical attention?

I cant take any of these guys seriously thinking this. Let alone getting all this shit over taking a ball point pen to stab a mofo if shit hits the fan...if you asked a MOS if they were to do Urbexing and hear just the general idea of it I bet at least 80% would say they would carry something JUST IN CASE.

Wow look how that guy with a rifle just stand there and lets it happen like most self defense BS you would see on youtube.

So maybe if the other guy had a melee weapon(knife, blunt force object) yeah I can see this working 100%(not being sarcastic)

So lets say right as soon as you exit your Urbex site a MOS stops you.

I have a pen. You have a giant walking stick most likely in a location that does not require one.

Whose odds are already a little better? I dont really need to go in depth on this one just play the scenario in your head a few times and figure it out.

Fully agreeing with Blackhawk and most others, bringing a weapon, even a well-concealed one, is nuts. Say a cop stops you just after you pop out of a chain link fence and into the clear, and say he's feeling power-hungry and decides that snapping a few cool photos of the place isn't a good enough excuse and decides to search you or your bag. Next minute, you're nicked.

Use your senses, common sense included, and if you think that a location might house weapon-warranting dangers, just visit it another time. If you're already in the location and such dangers arise, well, it's fairly simple. If you're in an active site, grab a printer or computer screen and haul it at them; if you're in an abandoned site, pick up a brick, a piece of metal, whatever, and drop it when you leave; and if you're in a storm drain, just use some Elvish magic and wash the bastards downstream.

But seriously, if you feel that there might be someone there once you're in that might want to hurt you, grab something and carry it with you for a while and ditch it, easy stuff

If I am in the middle of fending someone off I probably wont be as focused on looking around me for something to hurt them with. No knife, no gun, no obvious weapon. But my pen is right there in my pocket. I dont need to worry about looking for a brick, rock, stick because I already know what to grab, where it is and how to use it effectively.

I want to clarify that I was referring to Rambo I, when he goes nuts with PTSD and kills a bunch of Americans. Though, with a sharpened pen, all you'd do is get your ass thoroughly kicked.

Urbex has NO rules. Its an anarchic activity by every definition.

By that logic, nations have NO rules either; you could rob a bank and hump corpses so long as you don't get caught. There are however rules in UE you will bump up against if you do this long enough, network with other explorers, or join online communities like this one.

This thread is nothing but a troll job. With all this talk of melee weapons and stabbing people I think the troll (OP) has failed to consider the most effective self defense tool he can carry, the one between his ears, the one that generates common sense.

Now, no more talk about stabbing people please.
