I'm Never Going Back To My Old School

This small town school is one of the first abandoned buildings I ever laid eyes on as a kid. My Great Aunt and Uncle lived just up the road. When we would drive by I remember staring intently out the car window at the rather ominous looking building and wondering what it looked like inside. Many years later I finally satisfied my childhood curiosity and it was certainly no disappointment!

Schools in general are very expensive to build, but this one was especially so. It was constructed in the 1920's for around $400,000, or around $10 million in today's money. The school was closed in 1979 as population in the already small town dwindled and students were shipped out to larger schools in adjoining towns.

The amount of decay in this building is extreme. A fence was erected a few years ago because pieces of the facade were falling to the ground below. The building is now home to all manner of wildlife, stray cats (whom are fed by neighbors), entirely to many pigeons and my friend even spotted a fox on our first visit.
This school truly has a "Life After People" feel to it.

These are mix of shots from my first trip earlier this year as well as from two weekends ago when I made a return trip with Mookster while he was in town.
Please go over to the Photography section and check out his take on the place!

Holy shit that school is amazing! Great photos! There's so much plantlife growing, had it gotten to every room? And those bricks! Looks like the place has been relatively safe from vandals this whole time.

I never tire of seeing schools. The schools in the South, or at least those around me, are generally just one or two story. You guys have multiple stories and 3 times as much space to explore. Loved your pics. A window to another world is awesome, as well as the New Mother Nature Shot. The last pic has that special something....even if it is *poopified*. lol.

This place is cool, I am surprised in the lack of graffiti being abandoned all these years.

I absolutely love when plant life has moved into a building rather than just climbing the exterior walls, these are fantastic shots. I was in the second last graduating year of my highschool, 2 years later it lay abandoned for quite a while while they prepared the land for the new building that now sits in its place. I very much regret not exploring it before it was torn down, but eh, there will be others soon.

Excellent post.

Thanks for all the comments guys and gals!!

The plant growth was mainly confined to the auditorium. One of the skylights had many panels missing and the other was missing entirely. The small courtyards to either side of the auditorium had lots of greenery in them as well.

There was some graffiti scattered about. But it was all from local kids, profanities, pot leaves & penises aka the three P's of the teenage tagger. Some was quite old as well. One room had October 31st 1991 painted on the wall.
The building is in such a advanced state of decay it's difficult to tell if the damage is natural or vandal/scrapper created. Being in a small town I imagine it's mostly natural decay. Not many scrappers or taggers out that way.

Believe it or not the song I used for the title was playing at the local Tim Hortons when we stopped there for a caffeine fix after our trip here two weekends ago.

Did anyone leave any writing on the blackboards? I always check them for logs from past explorers and other writings.
