This mine operated from 1937 until 1968. The, mostly wooden, constructions are built on the steep slopes of the valley overlooking the town.

Great stuff, the climate must be good for the wood here. Does it stay very cold all year round? These structures remind me of a group I found last time I was up in Alaska, except those were badly decayed after a shorter time period. Excellent

Already a fantastic location by itself, but with those windswept mountain vista backdrops, the set really gives a sense of isolation and awe.

Just beautiful! Such immense landscapes, and the mining stuff reminds me of the mountains back home in Colorado. Svalbard is such a long way off, must have been no easy journey. Did you visit Pyramiden?

We did two days of Pyramiden, including a night at the soviet style hotel. Pictures to follow.

This is a dream trip of mine. Truly magnificent work.

Do you know if there's any access to any underground workings?

I'm also really curious about the temps you experienced. What an amazing trip. How did you get around? Everything on foot, or perhaps there was a dinky bike rental shop on the island?

We went in the first two weeks of September. We where very lucky with the weather. We had no snow or rain, mostly sunshine. Temperatures between 0 and 6 °c. When hiking up the sunny side of a mountain you can sweat like a pig but standing in the shade on a windy glacier can be very cold.

We had rental bicycles, but did most places on foot since asphalt road are rare on the island. We also rented a zodiac with driver to drop us of at a different place so we could hike from there on. Tourism on Svalbard is pretty big, so you have plenty of tour operators and rental places to choose from. In winter you can rent snowscooters or dogsleds.

We explored some of the underground tunnels of this mine. It was dangerous and in pretty bad condition though. Ill post some pictures soon.
