Ha, not when I first started composing.
Wasted too much time getting y'all a bird's eye shot
and uploading it to imgur...

It may be regional, but it should be seen by all of us.

It happens...
I agree everyone needs to see this.

Hellholes are real. Exploring at night is much more dangerous than during the day.
Old catwalks and smokestacks are high risk; climbing rungs, anchor bolts do corrode and can fail without warning.
Grating/hand rails/anything steel corrodes and can give way with little or no warning.

I wonder if it collapsed, had a giant hole or missing floor-section or she simply walked off of it?

Anyone know which catwalk they are referring to?
Was she at the stack top?

Sad to hear. This is why I'm pretty cautious when exploring. My fear of heights while a total pain in the ass does come in handy. Prevents me from going too high on sketchy stuff lol

Well, the news says she was 200 feet up on one of the smokestacks when she fell. I can honestly say that I would've never risked that at night without ever visiting the site before and doing it in the daylight a few times. Come to think of it, that's 20 stories of stacked bricks. Fuck that in any light.

That's a caged ladder. She had to have left the top of the ladder to fall. Guess they wanted a group shot on the top.

You're absolutely right Ed, and capping on the top of the stack was almost certainly crumbling to some degree. This fall was preventable if true.
Be it stack or water tank top, -never- leave the ladder. People have slid off water tanks tops to their deaths too.

I believe she was also drinking. I was at this place a few months back. I would have never even considered climbing the stacks given the condition of the rest of the building. And that was in complete daylight as well. Never drink and explore. Know your limits. This should be a learning experience for everyone.

Its always sad to hear of a fellow explorers death, this post is a good one to see, I've got a sort of fear of heights, so I never do anything to crazy, but recently I've been getting more dangerous. This post refocused me. Thanks,
MidSouth

I used to have to do stuff like that at my job... you're probably going, big deal.
Problem with where I worked was that there was corrosive shit in the air that ate the steel up. One of my coworkers had stairs leading up the lime silo give out under him while he was climbing up it to free the measuring cable.... and this was an operating paper mill!

if you don't need to climb something, don't. If you do, be frisky light on your feet or you might just get flying lessons whether you like it or not.

How did that stand up to OSHA inspections? Were inspections not regular, or the inspector just that apathetic?

you know what white liquor or lime is?
the shit eats everything up in a short amount of time. Right after that, they replaced the stairs. Within three years, they were getting dodgy again. In fact, I refused to go up to the bucket elevator drive and do the PM on it.

I've climbed drunk... but I knew how to climb.
It was electric tower and I had a fool I didn't like 'chasing' me.
I was fixing to watch him fall; unfortunately cooler minds prevailed and he was talked down and barely made it back to earth.
I enjoyed that... and would do it again.

That said climbing and drinking don't mix well; you better be centered as hell if you do.
If you don't have experience climbing, that's not the condition to learn how to... as my shaken adversary learned... the easy way.
Used to climb a certain stand pipe water tank a lot, drink a six pack at the top, enjoy the view and chill.
I always kept a leg lock on the roof ladder though.

*disclaimer: this worked well for me, others may have varying results.
Lol, the Greek tank/bridge painters taught me steel climbing, and they wuv their whiskey... they were a tad crazy, but never got KIA and that's all the counts.

The Greeks were good guys and fun. Hard workers.
The one was a former merchant marine and knew how to rig better than anyone I ever met. Old school.
