#30 doesn't look like a fallout shelter.
Maybe a reinforced weapons bunker of some sort?

It's definitely hard to tell from that particular photo, but this was one of the many fallout shelters on the island. Each had roughly 80 bunk spaces, kitchen, air filtration systems, tiny bathroom and shower, and lots of HAZMAT/radiation suit racks. There were two outside of each of the larger and more isolated buildings on Adak.

Really strange to stand in a place that was entirely meant for the worst case scenario...

Not sure what those chains were for. I see no overhead hoists for missiles/bombs.
Still it looks like an ammo bunker. They never however place ammo bunkers next to bomb shelters.

Where decontamination showers at the entrance to the shelters? I saw this at a Nike Missile Master.
Cold war facilities are way too cool

Wall-mounted bed (or storage) racks that could be folded up when not in use.

How much does a flight to Alaska cost? It would cost more for me, obviously, but making a trip to the north is something I've wanted to do for sometime. Maybe we could go to Adak together

One day I got a good camera.

Well, it depends! I was lucky enough to be able to make the flight using Alaska Airlines Miles, so it was about 40,000 miles for a round trip ticket. However, if you were to buy in cash, it's pretty stupidly expensive at nearly $1800. And that's not including a car rental (~$130 per day), food, lodging, or gas (nearly $7 per gallon).

So while I'd definitely recommend going there if at all possible, it's absolutely NOT a price performer. For what you'd spend on four days on Adak, you could go to Hawaii for two weeks.

That being said...it's totally worth it. And oh by the way...I'll be headed back there around when the tundra is green again at the end of July/beginning of August 2017...so...if you do end up wanting to plan a trip...

Very cool photo set. This is the kind of adventures I crave. I'm also adding it to my list of places if I ever take my plane up there. The islands are full of little abandoned complexes and mining/logging camps.

It was in September, we saw their silhouettes fade away, outlined on the horizon against the rays of the setting sun.

This whole set had the "holy fuckin' shit!" effect on me, but it was #5 that dropped me out of my chair.

Consider my map marked. I've been wanting to hit up Alaska for quite some time for reasons that have nothing to do with human settlement - perhaps this thread will end up pushing me out to Adak in the same trip.

Top notch.

Just FYI: In addition to all the other security measures required to protect nuclear weapons storage areas, depending on the specifics, a certain number of
security forces (Marines) had to be able to respond to threats within X minutes/Y distance of a potential threat at the weapons storage area, in addition to the guard forces on-duty at the WSA. This quick response force was
usually housed in a hardened facility adjacent to the WSA. The few I've explored had protected ingress/egress, firing positions on the roof, alarm panels for the WSA, a weapons armory, sleeping racks, small dining area/classroom, bathroom/showers & a day/rec area. The personnel would be rotated out every couple days, going to their normal housing. It'd make sense that they'd have MOPP suits there.

Absolutely. The thing that's making me think fallout shelters is not only their position in relation to every large building on the island, but also that there are no doors large enough to facilitate the easy/efficient transportation of any kind of weaponry into or out of the structure. I'll have to find some more pictures of the exteriors of these things and post them here, I think it would be good to have that visual reference for scale.

Want to make sure I get my facts straight if I'm making false claims and not realising it!
