Once one of the largest steel mills in the world, this plant employed over 20,000 people in it's heyday. But as with most American steel companies they fell on hard times in the 70s as demand for steel decreased and cheaper, foreign steel began to flood the market.

The vast 1,300 acre site was almost completely demolished in the 90s. Very little of the land has been reused, most is just a overgrown lot. Some windmills have been put up in recent years and a few businesses operate from the property. The only remaining buildings were used as coal breakers, there are maybe 8-10 left and it's quite a hike to see them all. I think we walked over 6 miles on this unseasonably warm February day.

And our lives were like some old western movie
Like desperados waiting for a train:

The lights that dance before you
Seem always to ignore you:

You've been in the pipeline, filling in time:

Thanks man! I've actually passed by this place many many times and never thought there was much to see back there. I was happily wrong!

Thank you, as always, for your kind words! I think The Light That Dances Before You was my favorite shot from the day. The lighting in that building in particular was amazing. Sorry no B&Ws for ya this time around. I'll make up for it next post!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the lyrics. I love music even more than exploring. Often when editing the shots they will remind me of a song or lyrics, which then becomes the shots "title".

Industrial places are so interesting. This is a hands down great set! And I'm liking the lyrics too. Music is super important. All my photos are song titles that fit and I'm listening to at the time, so that's awesome to see too.

Thanks everyone!! This has been one of my best locations this year. We are planning a return trip since we did not have the time to see everything.

I'm glad some of you appreciate the song lyrics for captions. I like to give all my "keeper" shots a title of some sort and since music is a huge part of my life the titles often come from lyrics.

Not snow and ice in July, we have long winters here, but not THAT long lol. We went here towards the end of winter. I am usually several months behind on posting stuff here.

The admin building? I missed that one unfortunately. They tore that down shortly before I seriously got into exploring.
