Black&White Questions

I didn't want to muck up the incredible B&W photo thread. How do you guys usually do your best B&W? I've always thought B&W on film was the cats rump, but I'm assuming most of us are doing digital. Are you guys doing B&W on camera, or converting it in post-processing?

I don't do a huge amount of it, but on the occasions that i feel like it, i shoot RAW and mess with it in lightroom. Messing around with color channels when the image is grayscale actually gives you a huge amount of control over the different values different (what were originally) colors will have.

But then i tend to get bored with black and white and give it a tint of some kind with curves, because that's how i do.

Im certainly no expert...i just have a deep admiration for B&W's so i started the Black and White Thread. Some of mine turn out well and some of them don't. I just like to play around with different pictures i shot in color and turn them into black and whites. Some color photos just look better that way. I do take some of mine to photoshop and add more or less lighting or at times i add contrast. Just play around with it. I noticed you have some pics of great abandoned buildings with vines and ivy... those would look really awesome as a B&W. I use no special format. I don't think you could possibly MUCK up the thread...Try it....You might be surprised how well you like it.

I do have a few B&W pics that I did in post that I really like, but theyre mostly of my kid. Didn't really think they belonged in the thread. I do have some
recent UE pics that I wanted to try in B&W, but haven't gotten to doing it yet.

I do like to adjust to B&W in post because I'm a sucker for leaving certain colour channels
still active when I think it bring something out in the photo. Many people abhor it.
But everything in moderation!

I've found it's best to reserve b+w shots for simple subject matter, or compositions that are simple, (not "busy") with symmetrical architectural or clearly balanced geometric shapes within a picture plane.

Black and white cuts out all the bullshit, and allows your eye to focus directly on the most basic elements of composition: line, contour, negative space, and contrast.

Wheedle, I really hope i didn't offend you by taking your Black and White and redoing it. I thought it came out quite nice...and, was just trying to show you what minor changes can do to a shot with just lighting the shadows. Please post some of your work on the B&W thread and i will leave them as you post them. If its not on topic...just say Off Topic if it makes you feel better, but it doesn't all have to be UE.

Wheedle, if you're shooting digital, B&W is a bastard child.
There I said it. The truth is ugly.
Shoot in RAW format, get the WB, and especially the exposure spot on.
Many times color shots turn into b&ws because the shooter screwed the WB and/or exposure. Burnt leftovers are the result.

Some subjects just look like crap in color. The UV glow of colored tattoos in sunlight are a good example. It's impossible to dial in the correct skin tone and get the tat colors true without photoshopping the hell out of it.
Some people have lousy skin tone and the truth isn't flattering at all.

With a properly exposed RAW image you can losslessly convert it to any pic style you wish including B&W because the RAW files saves all the needed data and also gives you at least 3 points of leeway on WB and exposure to work with.
The trade off for shooting RAWs is a larger file size and more post processing. Canon's DPP app makes processing a snap if you're shooting with a Canon.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

No, you didn`t... I like the edit. I was actually trying to brighten up his eyes when I converted it, but I always seemed to wash the rest of his face out too much.

Black and white is mostly about light and contrast. I don't do them much. But when I do. I just hit the black abs white button in lightroom and adjust curves.

Simple. And it works. Most of my black and whites turn out well. I think anyway...

Normally when I shoot black and white I go out with the plan in my head that I am shooting in black and white. I personally turn the dial on my camera to black and white, or use black and white film. I look at things differently when my outcome is black and white photos. I read/heard somewhere along the way that by removing color you are really left with two things in a photo, shapes and lighting. I enjoy finding the subjects and the viewpoints that take those two things and marry them together well.

Of course, there are sometimes as stated above that a particular photo is just botched and looks better as B&W.
