Security guards are often poorly paid and get little respect. To them, catching someone is an opportunity to prove their worth. So they often end up overreacting and treating people engaged in our hobby like they're criminals who've done something stupid and seriously wrong.

If you encounter security, run. You definitely don't want to deal with those idiots. If you're in a group, the odds of getting away are in your favor. But if it's the cops, don't run. Cops generally don't give people a hard time if there's no indication they're up to no good. Running just makes it worse when you get caught.

With that said, if you're a good photographer or writer, it can be worth getting permission beforehand to visit a place. You won't have to worry that someone at some point will question the value of your work if you broke laws to do it. It can cost you opportunities for publication.

Not true in all cases Hi/Po. I've been caught a few times lately in the Belgian steel industry. All locations are more or less actively guarded, and the guards have all been mellow. Some where slightly grumpy like "stupid photographers again, let me write down your names then get out and never come back". Some were nicer and even showed interest in the hobby, and the last one we met was completely chill and didn't even make a point of it. It was in a power plant full of motion sensors, which we though didn't work because the little leds didn't blink when tripping them. The first thing he said when walking towards us was "Haha I won!", and we realised that this guy was ok. We chatted about his work and our hobby while he escorted us out. He even explained with a grin on his face how they removed the leds out of those motion sensors so people can't see that they're tripped. Clearly a nice guy just doing his job to earn a few bucks, not out to screw 'innocent' photographers.

I don't know what it's like in the USA, but here in Europe the majority of the guards are not idiots. A thing they all have in common; they appear to be relieved when they find out that you're just photographing, not stealing copper.

bump. Well and correctly stated, Sir

If you want permission and a release, contact the owners or who is in control of the site -before- you get caught trespassing at the site.
If caught or IDed you will lose this option most likely.
3rd party owners or guardians can be demo contractors even the local police department as was the case with a NJ Nike base. Demo contractors are the easiest to get permission from generally.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.
