RIP, old friend. Today is a sad day for North Texas...

We knew this day was coming. Somehow, that knowledge did little to soften the blow that came when I heard about the wrecking ball that slammed into Swift this morning. Swift was my first "official" explore here in Texas. I think I will go out there now and pay my respects to an old friend. RIP Swift Meatpacking Plant!

Oops. I probably shouldn't have dedicated an entire new thread Swift's death... but, I did. Sorry, I saw this one but didn't realize it was so current, I should pay more attention....!

It's been one of those days.

SWIFT DEMOLITION UPDATE:

There are now police cars stationed on both sides of the building, 24/7. I spoke with one of the officers, asking about the demolition schedule. He said he wasn't sure what time they started in the mornings but he did say that he was there, "under orders to make sure no one jumps the fence and ties themselves to the building." I laughed out loud before I could stop myself. "What?"
He was also kind enough to let me park by the "no parking" area on the street and said he'd watch my car while he watched the building. Obviously, I only walked the outside of the property during that time.

I waited till dark with the intention of sneaking onto the site a couple hours later, but the cops never left (not that I expected them to) and the building had been newly secured to the point that I began to wonder if the dangers of traversing such a hazardous site with cops all around the perimeter was worth it. I did another drive-by and saw one of the officers had presumably found something of interest - he was lit up like a christmas tree. I took that as my sign from the universe that it wasn't meant to be. Not last night, at least.

The whole demolition, according to the media, will take 3-6 weeks to complete.

Update on the demolition. This photo was actually taken two nights ago. The "pillar building" pictured here is completely demolished now. Oh, and there are still squad cars posted on the property. I don't recommend trying to sneak in (it's doable, but the risk:toward ratio is way off now, IMO), they appear to actually be paying attention.

That last shot is killer Dee. I've been doing this for years and years and somehow never made it to swift, once of those always think there is time. Couple of others I think I better get to before they go to I guess!

Thank you! Yeah, Swift is one that saddened me more than I had expected it to. I used to go there on occasion by myself, for either a sunset or sunrise and found it very peaceful. It's familiarity, great views, and easy access made it a perfect spot for when I just wanted to get away.
