Farmhouses, school ruins and an unexpected surprise

After over a month of not having time for exploring, I was able to get together with a friend yesterday and we hit five different places in southeast Ohio. We planned to stop at two abandoned houses and stumbled upon a third. Then we made a revisit to a long-abandoned school that now sits in ruins. Finally, we stopped in a former coal mining town where we had planned to take exterior shots around the town but were unexpectedly allowed into an old theater.

1. Our first stop was this abandoned house. It was reportedly built in the late 1700s but I'm not sure how accurate that information is. I also heard from the same source that the house is in danger of demolition.

2. Just inside the front door is a wooden spiral staircase.

4. Upstairs were three bedrooms, one considerably smaller than the other two.

7. We unexpectedly found another abandoned house very near the first one. This house was built in 1884. Apparently there was a third nearby as well but it was demolished in 2013.

15. The third house we visited is known as the "Witch's House" because of the architecture. As far as I know, no actual witch has ever resided there.

19. I've posted this school on here before so I'll keep it brief. It was built around 1883 and closed around 1928 when it was consolidated into another district. Since then, the forest has grown up around it and the building now sits in ruins.

20. Nothing is left of the original structure except portions of exterior walls.

21. The addition has fared a little better. No floors remain on the first or second floors.

22. The stairway is still intact, allowing us to see the second story.

24. Shawnee is a former coal mining town in Perry County, Ohio. In the last half-century, the town has struggled mightily and many buildings are vacant. Residents keep them all locked up in hopes of restoration in the future. Knowing this, we expected to just walk around the town and take exterior photos of the old architecture.

25. This hollowed-out building now has a garden inside its exterior walls.

28. As we were walking around, we were approached by a young man holding a set of keys. He asked us if we would like to see the inside of the theater and of course we accepted. The theater was built in 1907 and has been unused since the 1960s or 70s. The first floor has already been renovated and owner is looking for funding to renovate the theater, which is on the second floor.

31. Rows of shops along Shawnee's Main Street are vacant and locked up. Most are structurally unsound and waiting on renovation money.

Nice! I love old theaters, so the unexpected surprise is--for me--the best part of the trip (although that Frigidaire sign is pretty damn cool, too).

I too love abandoned theaters! I got lucky enough to explore the old Madison and Eastown Theaters in Detroit (both are now gone) over time.
The photos of that first house were quite striking. A person could film a horror movie therein w/ little to no set alterations!
Many thanks for posting and congrats!

Thanks for the comments, guys. That theater was definitely spectacular. The people in that town were very welcoming and it's nice to see them doing their best to try to preserve its history.

It really is! I think small towns with such pride and little resources will do what they can to maintain the integrity of their town. I'm living in such a village right now and it's fun to be a part of.

Those bracketed balconies on the store fonts and homes seem like popular design that I haven't seen so prevalent and intact in any other place.

The balconies were actually what attracted us to Shawnee in the first place. I can't wait to see what it looks like once they get them fixed up.

The place is truly awesome. We were running a little short on time and didn't get to go through the entire town so I'm excited to go back and see the rest next time I'm down that way.

Thanks! We didn't really know what to expect with the Witch's House because all I saw of it before we went was one blurry outside shot. Ended up being a nice visit.

Thank you! That fan definitely looks like it has given up.
