Recognize this type of bunker or shelter?

It has 6 hatches in two rows of three. They were about man sized. On the opposite end, there were foundations for what was most likely a tower or some kind of small square-footed structure with about 8' sides. There was fencing around it, so it was obviously torn down long ago and is out of service.

Located into a steep hill near a bay in WA. There are a lot of bunkers built into beaches so that was my first impression. Could it have been a telephone or electrical station though? It is outside of a city.

A better image would help. Way underexposed...

Did you open those covers? Not military unless there is more ie a base. You'll need to dig deeper to figure it out. Are the covers concrete?
There has to be more there...

You need to get in there. Maybe it's the entrance to a REEEEALY long tunnel to the SSC!

It looks electrical in nature to me, like a connection bunker or something. I would say go back and try opening it, but I wouldn't be jumping down in there without checking for huge spiders etc. I get a bad feeling from that pic like something nasty is living down there

I was with my girl at the time walking down to the beach to catch sunset when I spotted this off the trail, or I would have inspected it more.

The hatches were sealed shut (I was unable to budge the half that I tried), although I couldn't tell if they were welded or just rusty. It's near a nice neighborhood so it wouldn't surprise me if they were welded closed. I'll make another trip and add it to the DB if there's no entry I can find, maybe someone else might be able to find a way in.

Could be an underground tank for water / fuel / sewage. If there was a comm tower and it's not (or didn't used to be) near power lines, then a fuel tank for a generator is likely. If there is evidence of other structures like barracks, a septic or water tank is likely. With a large number of hatches I would doubt it's a personnel shelter or bunker, usually those have only one or two entrances.

If it's close to the shore it could also be an anchor / junction station for an underwater cable (such as power to buoy lights, telephone or telegraph to an island, or control cables for WWII anti-ship mines).

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

Great thoughts. Those hatches though once accessible appear to be welded... wonder what it was?

Vivid, it be helpful to know roughly where this is located +/- 20 miles.

I think this is highly unlikely. I used to sell hatch covers for water/wastewater. Even the REALLY old steel ones for things like septic systems, lift stations and valve vaults were almost always cast into a concrete form and sat flush (pardon the pun) with the ground. The newer ones (over the last 30+ years) are mostly made from aluminum plate.

Given the heavy hinges and the number of doors I'd say you may have something interesting on your hands. It looks like its in a pretty moist area and the hatches themselves are raised I would go with some type of electrical equipment either being there or having been there.

Its pretty easy to see if they have been welded shut but you may have to get dirty doing it but given their size and thickness I'm not sure one person could lift the thing even if they weren't welded!

Look into who the current owner of the property is and ask them. Neighbors may be of some use here as well. Maybe a closer examination of any markings or writing may be found. The hinges are probably cast iron or steel and will probably have something marked.

The mystery continues... Lets get some answers!

Now you know better than that all the super duper semi conducting looper tunnelz is flooded man.

Besides I found the only dry/secret entrance. In Denton.

Seriously we need a real explorer in that area to go check it out and get pics, it may be nothing more than an irrigation control valve box or pipeline manifold.

I went back in the light, and uncovered a couple things I didn't see last time. The hatches were secured on all four corners: one side was clamped shut [literally], and the other was held shut by a wide spacer and a tightened nut. The aquamarine plastic piping that was about 8" thick that lined the edges. A third row of hatches beneath a felled tree and several seasons of new growth. And the most convincing clue of all: a sweet batch under some leaves, with an exposed concrete foundation and some piping sticking into it.

Either sewer tunnels to the bottom of the ravine it built into, or it's an upgraded drainage system.

I'll upload pics when I get home. Could potentially be opened. Definitely out of uuuuse. There aren't any warnings posted in the surrounding gating, which has fallen into disrepair. It was ringed with barbed wire at one point. The entrance to the property, is however quite well labeled that strangers are not appreciated.
