Let me give everyone a little backstory... this amazing place was build around 1930 in order to house the growing homeless population in the New Orleans area. After a few years, it kinda transitioned into a sort of low-income mental health/nursing home and finally, turned an assisted living place until it finally met its match when Katrina hit (like pretty much everywhere here in Nola). Anyhow, while walking through, you could still see the waterline, which was a haunting reminder of the hell that this place has been through. After sitting abandoned for the past 10+ years, it made its way onto the potential "chopping block" this year, and will unfortunately, probably be gone soon.

I have driven past this place almost everyday for the past year, and have always thought of what it would look like inside with its Gothic exterior.

Finally, after much deliberation, this being pretty much my first ever explore, and being armed with nothing more than a camera and a respirator, I decided that during a gloomy, rainy day would be the best time to go...(clearly I haven't done this before)

After making my way through the mud, I was invited by an open door! So, naturally, I walked right in to find the most amazing entry room!

The rain soaked floor had seen better days, but created what I thought to be an amazing effect.

As I continued on, you could see where past explorers and taggers had been each leaving a little mark on the place, and actually making it easier for me to access the roof.

Oh, and I had to take the single chair photo...

After I was done walking every inch of this piece of history, and not hearing anyone the entire time, I decided to head out the back entrance, to ensure I wouldn't be seen. As soon as I get to the back, what did I hear? A HUGE group of people just chillin in the back yard. Instead of waiting it out and seeing something I probably shouldn't, I figured I'd head out the side...and into the clear.

I'm new to photography and ue, so feel free to leave me some constructive criticism.

On the contrary - there's far less activity to worry about when making your approach on such days. I've purposefully waited for heavy rainstorms and dreary 'spitting', foggy days to make a number of difficult approaches. Nice pics. You're right; that entry room is indeed an excellent greeting!

I guess I can see that...it was pretty easy to get in. The bad part was slipping and sliding all over trying to make my way there, and since the roof was pretty much non-existent, the floor was hella slippery once I got in as well.
