This is Hunters Point in southeast San Francisco. It is an Old Navy shipyard. The atomic bomb that was to be dropped on Japan was transported through here. When the government did atomic blast tests on ships, those ships were brought back here to be evaluated and dismantled, so the area has a history of radiation contamination. If you ever see the MythBusters doing an episode in a multi-story Warehouse building i.e.Indiana Jones Whip, or zombie survival, it was in one of the Hunters Point buildings. Not this one, but there are a lot of buildings, this was just one of the larger more impressive ones.

Let me know if you're interested in going.

I haven't seen pictures from that building before, nice ones!

Any close call with security?

Passed by then on the way out on the main road. But I went out a different way than I went in.

Awesome shots!

I have to ask though, did you bring a geiger counter? I want to explore this area but from what I understand it's radioactive to the level where it's not safe.

I do not have a geiger counter, but last time I was wearing a radiation sticker and it didn't go off. They have been trying to clean up the site of radiation for quite a few years. The areas of higher concern have higher security.

It looks like the pictures aren't working anymore and apparently you can only edit them up to 24 hours after post.

In terms of radiation, it is very localized and they did a good job of making sure its largely inaccessible. For instance, one of the most contaminated places is a sealed pipe underneath drydock (or more accurately, graving dock) #1.

The issue with security is that this is still partially considered a US naval facility, so be careful where you go and what you do, as it is quite possible (although highly unlikely) they can press federal charges if caught.

The more imminent concern than radiation is organic particulates, so be careful in dusty areas. That building in the first pictures is in parcel D, and was part of a machine shop. There's a lot of metal and petroleum particulates in the ground there, so be careful. If you go over to the old barracks, be wary of the ground around it, since that is still a chemically active zone and was the most toxic (largely non-radiological) area.

Been seeing a few of these buildings popping up on Instagram also -- has security been loosened out there or something?

If so probably not for long.

Thank you Agent Case for trusting us with that information. For me, to know things like that is way more useful than a generic warning sign. A place like this has a lot of beauty, and history, but there are also serious dangers From getting caught, and to your health. From unseen chemicals that you know are there, to falling through the floor. I love learning all I can about places like this, but with this new information I would be wary to go again.

Stunning photos! Looks like a nice big place to explore. I'm not in the bay area myself, but I visit often enough that I'll have to make sure to take a look at this place one day.
