| | | On Sunday, a friend and I made our first trip to Detroit for the year. The weather was cold and rainy but it was really the only day we could work a day-long trip into our schedules. We had 8 buildings on our list. Three we couldn't get into so we ended up seeing 2 churches, a school, an auto body plant and the remaining portions of an engine factory. 1. In the morning, we started the day at a former engine factory built in 1911 and closed in 1955. Much of it was demolished in 1961. The foundry was used between 1979 and 1998 and was demolished ten years later. Today, only the power plant and engine test cells remain. DSC09469 by KMD1720, on Flickr 2. The test cells were packed with debris including car parts. DSC09471 by KMD1720, on Flickr 3. Top floor of the test cells DSC09484 by KMD1720, on Flickr 4. Ventilation shafts over the test cells. Scaffolding was set up on one side of the building and somebody left a generator lying around in the yard so I'm not sure what's going on with that. DSC09501 by KMD1720, on Flickr 6. We finished the day at an auto body plant that I'm pretty sure everyone and their brother has been to or at least knows about. Unfortunately, moisture kind of screwed up this picture and I didn't realize it until later. DSC09663 by KMD1720, on Flickr 24. Collapse DSC09610 by KMD1720, on Flickr 25. | | | Looks like a most radical day! Thanks for the tour. Personally, i've been to the second church/school and the automobile manufacturer. Plenty of good times at both but a very nerve-wracking time at the church.. (Apologies for the long story.) We were finishing up the explore, about a dozen or so of us, and we were hanging out around where the alter would be. Suddenly, this older dude comes stumblin' in with a group of younger bro-dudes. The bro-dudes made their way up to the balcony, while this older guy started shooting the shit with us. He seemed okay at first, but soon we discovered he was just an asshole scrapper, and he was most likely there to salvage some more goods for his own personal gain. He bragged about the things he stole from the church already, and i assume that's why he brought the bro-dudes, to help carry stolen goods out.. A bit of time went on, and we decided it was probably best to leave, so we starting finishing up our beers and getting ready to leave. Orangedrink and i were growing impatient and uncomfortable with the scrapper dude, so we started walking out, figuring we'd meet the others outside. Well, we almost make it to the side door when all of a sudden we bump into 2 of Detroit's finest. Awww shit. "Alright guys, everybody out." "You're not supposed to be in here." "Gather everyone together." "How would you like it if we just walked into your house." etc. etc. Turns out, the scrapper dude parked his junky pick-up right on the side of the church, by the door, and there is absolutely no reason to park there, unless you were inside the church. Not only did he park in a terrible spot, but the cops recognized his truck and have had issues with him in the past. Thanks, jackass. So, everyone filters out. Probably about 20 of us at this point with the scrapper and bro-dudes, and everyone started walking to their cars. No big deal. No tickets or much hassle. They just asked us to leave. As we were all walking down the alley, all of a sudden.. "Hey, you. Wait up." A few of us turn around. "Come here." We had no idea who the cop was talking to.. "Me?" I say. "No, you." Points towards Budda. Thank god. Budda "Me?" "Yeah." Budda starts to turn around. "No, not you. The other guy." He was talking about me. Shit. "What's that on your hip?" "It's a knife.." I stupidly, without thinking, reach for it. "WOAH! Don't reach for it!" The cop walks over to me and takes my Gerber fixed blade out of its sheath. I look down and my pipe/herb bag is slightly poking out of my pocket, right next to where he's reaching.. Shit. "This doesn't look legal. This is a pretty long blade.." Puts it to his palm, to check the length. "Yeah, we're gonna need you to come with us." I walk back the other way with the two cops, as everyone else retreats to their cars. I give one of them my i.d., and he goes to the cruiser to run it. Now, what was all said after this point is slightly a blur as I'm not going to lie, i was quite nervous. But it went a little something like this.. "You know this knife isn't a lawful length, right? This is a big deal." "No, i'm sorry. I'm not from here. I didn't think to look up the laws." "You think playing dumb is going to get you off?! This is a big deal!" He then starts picking at his fingernails with my knife.. Okay.. "So, not only are you trespassing on private property, but you're carrying an illegal weapon. This isn't good.." "Yeah, i understand. I really do apologize. I'm not trying to cause any trouble. We're just taking photos and experiencing the history." "I know what you're doing. It doesn't make it okay. Or legal." He starts to make believe he's picking at his teeth with my knife.. Alright.. "Throw me that sheath." I remove the sheath and toss it to him. He then puts the knife in it and starts walking towards me. "Put this in your backpack and get outta here. You guys stay safe today. Don't let me catch you with this on your hip again!" THANK GOD he didn't search me. What a friggin' relief. I definitely thought i was going to jail that day. Turns out, he was just messing with me the entire time. The bastard! He got me good. I hightail it out of there and find the rest of the group. That was the most nervous i've been in a long time. Moral of the story: If you carry a knife on ya, know the laws in the particular state you're in. Oh, and Detroit cops are jokesters.
