I was told last week about an abandoned gas plant in New Mexico. So, with nothing to do I headed out for the two hour drive in search of exploration riches. The info I was given was a bit out of date, as the indicated plant has been upgraded recently and is now in use...

Not wanting to waste the trip I drove to the next town to see if there was any potential there. Thankfully, the exploration gods were with me! Just on the other side of the railroad tracks I found this beauty. Running across things I never expected is one of my greatest joys in this hobby.

After doing some asking around I found it was a "carbon black plant". Having no idea what the hell that was I did some digging online and found a good entry explaining what this place did on wikipedia:

https://en.wikiped.../wiki/Carbon_black

I hope you enjoy the set!

Looks like the locals have been using that place for target practice.

Not only did you show us some really cool pictures with a story of good luck, but you (and wiki) taught me something.

Very cool!

Pretty cool. There's a bunch in TX, one in Wicket, but in worse shape than that one. They are indigenous to this region because of cheap energy and petrol. They are dependent on cheap energy and demand.
There maybe ones more intact, some are gone, and others still active or the site is being used for other purposes.
So it's a unique find probably dating back to WW2? These have fascinating me for a few years now.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

Yeah...I'm thinking that most of the blasts you see came from a shotgun. There were a ton of shells laying all over the place. Aside from one room commenting on a rival town's lack of skill at football, and a few bullet holes in the walls, the place was really pretty clean!

Thanks! I had no idea what the hell "carbon black" was and I knew that there was probably no way I was going to get any history on this particular location so I just looked for some general info on the industry. I ran across a really interesting on the history of the industry in Texas while taking a shit this morning. At one point we accounted for over 80% of all production!

This really was a pretty cool find. Now that I've seen this one I'm going to be scouring the web and Google Earth to find some more. If you run across any out here let me know.
