Managed to poke my head inside a new location a few days ago, and I want to get better at this before returning next week. I'm looking for criticism in all areas, from composition to post-processing.

Nikon D3300 - AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II
All are shot at an f-stop of 8.

#1 and #3 are very nice. Compositions and exposure seem good. Maybe next time mess around with a little depth of field.

I personally don't care for a lot of empty space.

#1 and #3 are good shots.

I also suggest playing with exposure compensation and aperture.

I just hate you...I almost threw that same lens in the trash when I got my 24-70mm for my D750. Then you post these AMAZING pics with a shitty lens and a camera with a bracketed sensor. Obviously better equipment doesn't equal better pictures.

Great set, beautiful color, good composition, but I still hate you for taking better pictures than I EVER have and using inferior equipment!

Very nice. That location has great textures and light!

I think I like 1 and 3 the most too. If you still have access to that place it seems like you could do some great night stuff or staged shots.

One thing to try for the other ones that people don't like quite as much is to change the perspective a bit. These all seem to be shot standing height. The picture of the bomb graffiti could be more interesting, I think, if shot wide open (at 18mm) and with the camera on the ground looking up. It would have the effect of them standing over you and glaring down and may have a more emotional effect. Something to try anyway!

I often remind myself in a place like that to focus on the interesting textures of the paint peeling and whatnot. Sometimes a tight shot can provide interesting colors and textures to play with and have some fun shots. One from this week I took on a lark that I kinda like:

I'd love to see the next batch.

Thanks for the comments guys! Out of curiosity, what is it that you like about #3? I thought the brights would be too bright, and the darks too dark on that one.

I'll definitely try experimenting with DOF and different heights, and I'm glad you reminded me about textures, clubkill, because I'm actually going to need some for another project I'm working on, which I'll post about here if it sees any progress.

Areas of light and dark provide tonal contrast and something for your eyes to move between. It's what can make picture more interesting than one like #2, for example, where the whole scene is pretty evenly lit and there is not much sense of difference spaces in the photo.

#3 gives the impression that you are coming around the corner to this scene with the window and feels more dynamic as a result.

Great photos--they did a good job of showing a lot of the building in a good way. The exposure is great and they're all super sharp (as they should be at f/8!). #3 and #4 are my favorites. However, don't be afraid to get up close and really focus in on something small, or to use a shallow depth of field to kind of show the viewer what to look at in the photo. For example, I like #4, but it might be more interesting if you shot at f/3.5 (or smaller if you have another lens) and focused on the graffiti, instead of having everything be sharp.
