Looking to get into real photography and videos

Hey all been urban exploring for about 3 years now, been using my phone camera which has yielded decent pictures. Now I'm looking to step up my game and get a DSLR of some sort. I think I'm locked on a Canon t3i but would like to hear opinions. I want something I can use for a while and take quality short videos but also good pictures. Thanks!

Biggest question is what is your budget? That'll help narrow things down a lot.

I'd like to spend under 400, and would buy used or refurbed most likely

Under $400 for a DSLR I'd say a used nikon d3300, or the canon.
If you can though, maybe look into getting a mirrorless camera, as I've found that I've taken my mirrorless a lot more places than I would have been able to take a dslr because of it's size.

D3300 is nice if video is your thing. Most affordable DSLRs that I've seen won't let you shoot 1080p in 60 FPS. Arguably more important than the camera is a tripod, though.

Buy a camera you can afford. Use it. Buy a tripod. Mount your camera on that. Use your camera that way when you can't use it handheld.

I think you made a good choice. I used to use a t1i until the card reader got bent. I upgraded to the t5i and i'm loving it.

Here's one I took from my hotel balcony in Philly a couple of weeks ago. I used a CR2 converter on the photo and now it has a weird tint. Also made a short video linked below.

I'm not really keen on the edit and you don't need a CR2 converter - get yourself Adobe Lightroom which is part of the Adobe monthly suite things for like $10, or just do what 90% of people do which is get it free from TPB or KAT...

It will allow you to open and edit CR2 and other RAW files very easily and edit them with a ease, but heaps of control - if you'd like I could do a basic write up on how I edit my photos, or at least link you a few good starting points.

The problem with your edit is the yellow tint basically, and there's not a lot happening - the black are also clipping.

The unedited flick is better, if you'd like I could edit it for you and tell you what I did.

Welcome to the world of DSLR's though - the learning curve is steep and there's a lot to learn but you'll be glad you did it

I have Adobe lightroom and all those other programs, a write up would be loads of help! The CR2 converter gave the picture that tint, I link the unedited normal CR2 pic much better. If you want to edit it, that'd be epic! I'm learning a lot so far, can't wait till I get better. I feel as though it'll help up the quality of my Facebook page.

If you have Adobe Creative Cloud, then you have Photoshop CC.

What I did is program Adobe "Camera Raw" to open up as soon as I load a file in to adobe photoshop even if it is NOT a CR2 file. Using the Adobe Camera Raw allows you to "non destructively" edit your images and there are a ton of things you can do within Camera Raw itself.

To turn the above mentioned setting on, got to
Edit > Preferences > Camera RAW > JPEG and TIFF Handling - Select Automatically open all supported JEPGs

Here's a video on Using Adobe Camera Raw with a different access:
https://www.youtub...atch?v=PoYjqP8laDI

A simple tutorial they have plenty of videos that will help:

Here's working with Video in Adobe Lightroom CC:

I hope that's helpful. Remember, you do not need to convert your images before using any Adobe software.

There are two lenses you absolutely must have if you get a DSLR:

A 50mm prime, for pretty much everything. Prime lenses are lenses that lack a zoom function, and as a result they have a wider aperture range, and focus faster than zoom lenses. This keeps you from missing shots, and 50mm is a good focal length because it's approximately similar to your own field of view. Good for large open areas, or anywhere outdoors usually.

A wide angle lens (20mm or less, one with a zoom function is even better). These will help you get indoor shots effectively. There will be a slight fisheye effect which you can either embrace, or edit out in post. Personally i have a Sigma 10-20mm which is mostly what i use when exploring indoors.

The lenses will do more for you than the body will. In terms of camera budget, you should go for an adequate body, but the best lenses you can afford. Just be sure the body has a good ISO range unless you're using a tripod, which i'd recommend doing anyway.

I'd like to add that you want something with a "higher effective ISO."
Having an ISO that goes to 128,000 means absolutely nothing if major deterioration begins at 800 ISO which in most cases was my cut off with my old Canon T5.

If you could upload the CR2 somewhere so that I can edit it i'll edit it for you and write up what I did, but I need the cr2 obviously.

I don't know what you're using a cr2 converter for? you can save as a jpg through lightroom or through windows itself...
