I'm kind of curious on this one. Depending on the conditions a lens is exposed to, the elements can have mold/fungus growing on them, even internally. Obviously storing your lens in a clean/dry place helps discourage this a lot.

That said, a lot of exploring does end up in places with iffy humidity, spores in the air, etc. With any lens that isn't internally focusing or completely sealed, using the lens will naturally draw that moist/moldy air into the lens.

A good fix if you are worried about where you just were, is to shine a UV light into the lens for a while to help kill the little bastards. Don't do this if your camera is on though. That's bad lol.

The easiest way to tell is if your lens is starting to get hazy or even has moisture spots in it. UV is the first step, but be prepared to send the lens off for a professional cleaning unless it is something easily replaced. The fungus puts out acid that will etch into the glass and ruin the lens.

======================================

Anyone had to deal with this before? Figure I'm in a very dry climate but am wondering how often people have this crop up.

If you catch it soon enough it's a non issue. most of the time it relates to storage long-term, not short-term exposure to moist environments. there's spores in the air all the time, so just keep the lens dry when stored at home and it should be fine.
