My university offered a free lockpicking seminar I attended a few weeks ago. Pretty interesting stuff, the basics of lockpicking can be learned in about an hour or two. Within that timeframe I was able to open some very basic masterlocks, though anything more complex is almost certainly above my current skill level.

I always carry my set when going exploring.

It had open me doors (litrally) to places that otherwise i would have never got in.

It's the better way to make a clean in and out.

The only rule is, once picked, don't keep it on you. Like any other "tools".

Picking is hard with hard locks with security pins but all the masterlock crap and cheap door locks are easy even for begginers.

Don't buy a 30 pick set, it's useless. You basically need only maybe 3 pick and 3 different witdh tension bars.

I would suggest checking your state and local laws before venturing out. In some localities simply having lock picks on your person will get you arrested for possession of burglary tools. And of course, picking a lock will often up charges from trespassing to B&E if you get caught. If you are going to carry them, make sure it's worth the risk.

It's not illegal, you can have lock picks on you here (and im pretty sure in the states too), just dont get caught and have them on you then yeah it will be possesion.

Yeah. I live in one of the three states where simple possession of lock picking tools is illegal.

Better to do the research ahead of time then to assume it's OK and find out it's not.

Just my .02 worth.

Out of curiosity, has anyone used bump keys? I ordered a set recently and I still haven't really decided whether I will use them for exploring once they come. I wouldn't think most cops could recognize them but obviously better safe than sorry on that.

As far as I can tell, you need a screwdriver or bump hammer to make them work but maybe a rock would work just as well. I've also considered just putting the 3 most common bump keys on my car keychain. They might come in handy and it's doubtful anyone would ever notice that 3 of the 15 keys on there are cut all the way down

Are we living a life that is safe from harm? Of course not, we never are. But that's not the right question. The question is, are we living a life that is worth the harm?

It's effective but not as stealth as picks. And yeah you can use wathever to bump it.

Having a couple most common cant hurt and it's way less noticable if they don't know about keys. Im pretty sure they would not see the 'weird' bitting.

Anyone trying to "pick" a Master padlock with lock picks and tension key would be very disappointed to know how easy it is to shim most typical padlocks.

But what do I know...

There's a saying in poker that I used to always hear the commentators on the World Poker Tour say that I believe is true for lock picking as well:

"The game of poker takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master."

I learned how to pick a lock at a Jack in the Box with a couple bobby pins in about 5 minutes, but mastering lock picking is an entirely different story.

Lockpicking among criminals, that's what you are don't kid yourselves, is like premarital sex before the 60's. Lots of people are doing it, BUT YOU DO NOT FUCKING TALK ABOUT IT.

i have never used them exploring, but i love bump keys. i made a small set several years ago, and if its a deadbolt, its open. if the grinding is clean they likely wont be spotted as anything out of the ordinary. any weighted object (i've even used my cell phone) will work, but obviously a nice rubber handled screwdriver works quite well - no need for a fancy hammer. a little bounce to the object helps too. just like using a tension bar you really need to get a feel for it, but once you have the muscle memory its almost as easy as using a regular key. i will say that padlocks have been more difficult to bump for me but it can be done with practice.

they do still fall in lock pick territory and can potentially land you some trouble, but are less common and more incognito than a set of picks.

Even an orangutan can pick a lock.

Look up an orangutan named Fu Manchu that made a lock pick that he used to regularly escape his enclosure and knew to keep it hidden so the zookeepers wouldn't take it away from him.

This would have been in the late 1960s in Omaha, Nebraska.

It's sad that humanity has collectively decided that cheap chocolate and coffee are more important than keeping wild orangutans a thing.
