What to do when you cant find what you're looking for

I'm curious.

I'll try and make this make sense. I can't be the only one who has wondered. .

What do you do when you want to find old pictures of a particular location? I'm talking like pictures of when a place was in "lesser" decay or pictures of when a place was still in operation?

Let me give an example. The place I'm looking for pics was abandoned in the 60s. And was the victim of fire damage in the 90s.

I have scoured google and flicker looking for pictures of what this place looked like intact, but I'm only finding pictures 9 years old or so.

I've also read the tutorial on how to find practically anything.

I know this may seem like an odd request but my curiosity really has grip of me. Please tell me I'm not the only one this has happened to.

Suggestions?

Edit:I may also post this up in my regional forum to see what I get for responses.

The answer is keywords, the right keywords always lead to the best answers.

You can search in books in google too.

What is the location you try to find pictures? (can be in PM)

Depending on the location here are some suggestions:

1.Local historical society.
2.City or county property records can get you maps and lead you to
3.Past or current owners
4.Neighbors
5.Past newspaper articles

Suspected Urban Locations:

Look at the city archives/records/library/university. You'll find all kinds of info including maps and property registries, and possibly even old aerial photographs. It's amazing the wealth of this sort of information that exists you can access for free. I went to the library to find info on a specific institution and wound up looking at aerial photos from 1920, and even an old map from 1783!

Suspected Rural Locations:

Go around and just ask (older) people in the area. I've done this to residents of ghost towns in the area, and a few of them are usually pretty glad to tell someone. I've had my fair share of long-winded oral recitations of the rise and fall of towns in the area. There used to be a lot more railroads. Interestingly enough it was the Wal-Mart in the town 45 minutes away that put the final nail in the coffin for a lot of these places (yes, it's cheaper to drive that long to buy shit than to have stores in the middle of the country).

Peptic Ulcer is also really fond of talking to locals to get information on locations, so it wouldn't hurt to PM him for tips.

Thank you for the responses. This is an old factory. When I was there taking pictures, I had a few locals come up to me, but they were younger and didn't know much. I'll see if our local library can find anything. If not, I'll have to go to their local library.

Thank you all again for the responses!

If there's nothing immediately in front of me that solves the problem, I usually just masturbate, furiously, and read the spray like tea leaves.

For some reason you (Dee Ashley) strike me as the sexy Vala, maybe because of a silhouette from one of your photos. Maybe it was you, maybe not.
