An Afternoon Quickie

I decided I needed to start contributing some actual images to this board and have been eyeing a rather large barn with a low profile. It is, however, part of a larger complex that is my real goal to explore. Think of this as a pre-season game; it's still work, but it doesn't really count towards the prize. This little guy's big brother is in a little more visible area, so I kind of wanted to see if I got into any problems checking this out before I went to the big show.

The best thing I can describe this structure as would be "Barn/Office". Stick with me here...

First off, from the road, this place is deceptive in size. I didn't realize how big of a structure I was dealing with until I got up to it.

This place smelled a lot like a skunk orgy and was a minefield of cowpies. I thought for a second, "Maybe someone is still using this." Then I came to te first open door.

Ok, nope. The pile of bones that filled up this stall was a pretty good clue that I was dealing with something that hasn't been kept up with. There were about a dozen or more of these pens, accessible from outside and inside both. (this was the only bone-strewn one, however.) I noticed something on the top of each pen that struck me as both practical, yet odd. Automatic air fresheners, like you would find in a public bathroom. Kudos for trying to control the stench, I guess.

Also inside, I found another building inside the bigger building.

We're talking multiple rooms, an a/c unit on top, plumbing...it was like small office of some sort, as best as I can figure out. Anyone with anymore barn knowledge than me can certainly offer up an explanation if they have one.

It was obvious this place had been empty for a while...

Quite a while, actually...

(I think I can hold it until I get home)

There were some other fun little things around the place, but not too exciting...like the doors to the pens...

and the windows...

and other assorted farm....things...

But the real gem came when I rounded the corner to head back to my car and saw this:

A mattress?!?
Who...why...
Did some drifter take "Home on the Range" a little too seriously? Or did someone just need a semi-hidden spot to drop off junk?

We may never know...

Nice find! Thanks for posting it.

Looks like it was a pretty nice barn at one time. The building inside the building was most likely office/tackroom/feed/supply storage. Those things that look like air fresheners are bug spray for keeping flies off of horses and other livestock. Most folks just don't use them for anything but horses or show animals. Could have been a large animal vet running out of it. If so, everything else had to have been sold off or stolen quite a while back.

Ahhhh, yes! Your explanation of those things makes waaay more sense than mine.

You saying it was once a nice barn for horses and show animals pretty much confirms that it was part of this larger ranch that was used in breeding prize-winning cutting horses.

Thanks for the info and the feedback.
