Strange, my 1st night, there was a squad of 2 young Latino detective cops... right around the corner, essentially by the entrance. They saw me walking towards them all of a sudden, rolled down their window, asked me I needed anything. I said no. Asked me what I'm doing. I said I want to "take a nap." He asked are you homeless? I said yes. And then he said "okay, good night take care" and he immediately turned on the car and drove off...

could this have anything to do with your building being blown up?

No.

There are a fire at 37th/Ashland 3 winters ago, and also on Cermak and Western some winters back so I'd say it's all related.

Why do you think those fires are related to the most recent one even if they were arson?

You know this summer, I was walking by a small fire station by 33rd/Ashland and I asked someone that looked like a supervisor "did you guys ever find out about the fire on 37th/Ashland and Cermak/Western a couple winters ago?"

And he responded it was probably homeless people living there trying to stay warm by starting a fire that got out of control...

This kind of baffled me by the time I moved in because why 37th/Ashland and not 35th.

1 day after the fire I asked the gas station clerk across the street during the event and he said the same thing, it was probably homeless people trying to stay warm. Well I can guarantee that there were no hobos living there, at least not regularly, so therefore I think arson. Then I asked him if he got surveillance cameras facing, and he said he they didn't contact him but he did his own backtrack and didn't see anybody so he thinks they came in from the other side (35th).

Since there is no news article it sucks, I'd like to ask the fire crew again this summer if they ever found out anything and likely this time they won't make the "oh it was probably homeless people" argument.

I wonder if these arsonists hid somewhere (but not leaving the building) and then came back right after the explosion to recover the evidence.

I wouldn't totally rule-out homeless people starting them accidentally. Dixie Square Mall had fires left and right; some arson, but a couple were located in stores where I found evidence of inhabitants.

For what it's worth, this building is used all the time for firemen and police tactical training.

I've been there when the bomb squad and tactical training has been occurring. Shit is regularly blown up.

You know what I've met someone who told me about it, don't they actually go into the building on 36th/Ashland, and not 35th?

Anyways, only 1 building was torn down, and that was 2 years ago. I don't think anything's been blown up since.

Posted by Neal By the way, does anyone know what that place is like in the winter? After you go down the steps into the grid-tunnel system I see you walk on top of some ice. So in the summer is that all water and therefore hard to get across? I know this is def true on the far right-end, where there seems to be a tunnel several feet deep, which is all ice now. Is the whole thing separated by water?

I was there this year right before it probably froze over and the tunnel was definitely flooded, I've only gone once so i'm not sure if it is always like that though. My guess is that the water didn't have time to evaporate before it froze.

I eat lunch and hang out at the silos pretty much year round. That entry way to the tunnel in the winter is always wet, if not frozen, in the summer it's always a little bit damp or just wet. I've never seen it dry even in the high summer when it's 105* and you can fry eggs on the rusted metal plates lying around the field there. But also, it's not a deep spot.

If you wanted to avoid the awkwardly laid out planks of wood or whatever else is used to step through the water, your feet only go down a few inches unless it's been raining.

Silos are notoriously dangerous. -Trust nothing- including floors, stairs, anchored steel ladders or anything attached to concrete.
Make sure there is plenty of light, each step counts.

Many here, myself including have almost taken that last step to oblivion or seen multiple anchor bolts fail and dump everything they were supporting in a *snap*
Once you see that happen nothing anchored to concrete will ever seem the same.
The corrosion can be completely invisible... rebar can fail like that as well and bring down a concrete stairs and more.
An environmental engineer inspecting Byberry was killed like that.
Walk gently and stay close to the wall...

almost happened to me once before in a building - not fun haha
