Chicagoans: stay out of my building, moved to Damen silos.

Hey urbexers, fyi I'd stay out of the old Wrigley building on 35th... 2 nights ago someone put a firebomb explosion on a 4th floor, which either shattered all the windows or the fire fighters broke the windows to let the smoke out. But there was an explosion cuz I heard it and went back to sleep. Woke up an hour and a half later to a little smell of smoke and left. Saw police and fire trucks surrounding all the buildings so escaped. In my old room of the fired building I left a piece of paper on the bed to make the "Welcome to my home, college student staying for the winter" and my phone number, which I imagine the firemen took a photo of. Now I will be amist their investigation. But the problem is now they upgraded security, I note the initially started off working longer shifts or so, I presume they are now there 24/7. 2 days later I saw 2 cars, 1 empty, which I presume they were going in the building. So I moved out.. am staying at the Damen silos, in the underground system. What's so strange to me as it hasn't even showed up on the Chicago Breaking News, I guess they don't want the city to know about it yet, I even Google searched " [...] " and all the 2013 story popped up from 37th/Ashland fire. Perhaps there will be an article when the investigation finishes.

How do you stay warm at night sleeping under the Damen Silos in the middle of winter?

I sleep with a coat on, you just need like a sleeping bag or blanket for the legs.

By the way, does anyone know what that place is like in the winter?

After you go down the steps into the grid-tunnel system I see you walk on top of some ice. So in the summer is that all water and therefore hard to get across?

I know this is def true on the far right-end, where there seems to be a tunnel several feet deep, which is all ice now. Is the whole thing separated by water?

Wow, that's pretty crazy! Glad you got out safely.

I wonder if you are now having any second thoughts about all that random stuff you were posting about the Latin Kings and what-not.

Possible suspect in an arson investigation, CHECK! Making strange statements in an online forum, CHECK! Kind of a strange, loner-type individual with seemingly weird social norms, CHECK!

Be careful, be safe, and don't forget to ask for a lawyer before saying anything to the cops!

Was that a 'Thank you' message from the LKs?
They might not like frosted flakes and bananas... or maybe the book.
Best not to post specific details of where you hang out online...

There was a guy living down there for awhile some years ago. David "Gone" Brault was his name, there's a doc on him which may be of use to you.

Yea it certainly could be Latin Kings. I mean I'm part of a Chicago gang forum and am a open critic, and also posted about my abandoned building.

You know I saw that video. Was he for real?

Anyways, 1 large room in the basement is all trashed up. But he might have been in an upper floor.

I met this hobo once named Kara who used to live in the basement of the Damen Silos. She hung a rug up over a doorway and made a makeshift room in one of those chambers. I'm glad that it sounds like you're setting up camp a little further in, because she ended up being driven out by some homeless guy with anger issues.

Eventually she built herself a yurt and moved to the swath of abandoned land by the St. Charles Airline Bridge,(turtle sex) which is where I met her. Haven't seen much trace of her since, but I found this article about her:

http://www.chicago...doned-chicago-land

Anyway, good luck. Maybe don't post too much specific info about your whereabouts.

^ Every time I go to the Damen silos, I always meet people. Is it like that for everyone?

The 1st time I went there were 2 White males blond hair said it was their 1st time.

I went in, saw 4 White girls that ran out.

2nd time I went in recently, was a group of 5 kids in the 8th/9th grade, they were climbing back down from the tower. They never been to the basement and I gave them a tour.

On my way out yesterday saw another group coming in and I went "You guys headed to the silos?"

When I was there last year we saw at least three other groups of people exploring or just hanging around, then the police showed up just as we were leaving...

Probably the most high profile exploring and graffiti spot in Chicago. Transformers did to that place what The Dark Knight did to Brach's several years ago.

Didn't know the Brach factory was in the Batman movie actually. Are you talking the 2005 movie?

What's interesting to me, the Damen silos doesn't seem to attract Hispanic or Black people. (I mean, the only Hispanic and Black people I've seen are ones who affiliate with White people.). And I haven't seen any gang-related graffiti, or by tagging crews. And for me some of the art or quotes or graffiti it seems it was obviously done by White people.

But wasn't this place popular before the Dark Knight movie?

Brach's was in the 2008 movie, where Gotham General Hospital is blown up by the Joker. Damen Silos had a bridge blown up for a Transformers sequel a couple years ago.

Most of the paint at Damen is by graffiti crews, not gangs. The top of the silos facing Damen Ave. is prime real estate and has changed names a few times. I forget who was up there way back, but Evol and Afroe had it before Transformers buffed it - the two were later killed in an accident on one of the expressways. The CMK Crew took it right after Transformers was filmed, and save for a very short lived interruption by writer Dtek, has had it since.
