I realize this might of been posted before, given the age of the video. But here's a good talk featuring phreakmonkey and MutantMandias! They're contrasting the urban exploration community and the hacker community, it's a good presentation.

Cool video, thanks for sharing!

It's more like telling hackers what UE is - it had some interesting comparisons, but I was a bit disappointed that it didn't have more about how hackers' tricks can be used in UE. It just said "leave the lockpicks at home".

At the same time, it's a pretty great intro to the hobby - rookie explorers could learn a thing or two.

Being presented at defcon, yes it was more tailored to the hacker community as a basic intro, but really what other hacker skill could be applied to UE? They did somewhat touch on social engineering.

Speaking as someone who does quite a bit of both, and exploration on high-security active sites, just about every hacker skill can be applied to UE. Sure, perhaps not computer hacking per se, but even that has its uses and the skills are transferable.

Examples:

  • Physical security hacking to bypass locked doors
  • Elevator hacking to bypass floor lockouts
  • Hacking key control systems to determine key codes for locations (without ever stealing keys)
  • Electronics hacking to temporarily disable alarm systems that would otherwise render a place off-limits
  • Despite what the talk may say, some places are simply not accessible without lockpicking

I generally only do this sort of thing on things like roofs, tunnels, or abandonments – not to get into anyone’s office.

Interesting ideas, haven't ran into any buildings where those would be practical yet, since not many of them still have electricity or elevators I'd trust to stand in for more than 5 seconds after seeing their motor rooms.

The elevator hacking one is cool though, I could see it being pretty practical for active building infiltration.

I've made a thread with a video about it before,

Thanks for the shout-out.

Interesting tidbit - and some insight as to why I said the "no lockpicks" &etc thing - I have since been shown my own slide-deck by law enforcement officials. ;)

Cheers!

Just finished watching, and enjoyed it! One of points I liked most is, "It's ok to ask permission." I've gotten into at least four great sites, just by asking permission and offering the owner or representative photos when I'm done! Having permission didn't make it any less exciting to explore and photograph!
