Scouting Saved Me

Let's make a thread about how scouting a location saved you from a possibly sticky situation. Here's one that happened to me today.

Happened upon this factory/foundry and proceeded to drive by it a few times. I was so excited about finding this so unexpectedly that I parked and walked the property and showed up 20 minutes late to my coffee date. I walked around the fence and decided I would go in at a different date. As I was walking back around to my car I saw a note taped to a perfectly intact and strangely modern door. If you can't read the note in the picture it says "UPS, Please leave package at front door". Upon further inspection I saw there was a fully furnished and obviously active office attached to the building. I'm not sure why it's there or why it's attached to a dilapidated factory but I don't really want to go in to find out. But the upside is, if the office workers are nice and know who owns the factory I might be able to gain permission to get in.

Yep, I've had a few occasions where I showed up at a site only to find it's still in use. With me it's usually farmers though.

On the plus side, now you get to work on your social engineering skills and see if the staff will let you wander around in there. There has to be a good reason they're setup in an old foundry.

I've had a few instances of this - most of what I do are active sites, so it's imperative to ensure that an area is clear before going in. Most commonly it's when entering mechanical rooms: I'll always take a quick glance down the hall for people or equipment before moving further in; been saved once or twice by this - saw security, and quickly headed out the way I came before he had a chance of catching me.

I also have one story of the reverse of this - I didn't scout properly, and it could have ended very badly (but didn't). I entered an active building rather late at night, and found the door to the basement (a place I've wanted to explore for awhile) wide open! I was thrilled, but that should have been my first warning sign.

I then saw many of the internal doors down there wide open too! 2nd warning sign. And tools strewn around - 3rd. I went and looked around, and upon stumbling into the boiler room: there was a maintenance technician sitting there, interrupting his work to stare at me. I just said "I'm lost, where's Dave's office?" but it was so loud in there he mustn't have heard me. I was dressed in fairly nice attire, and my body language must have conveyed the same vibe, because his response was justifying his presence there: "I'm just fixing the boiler - it went out a few hours ago". I figured I'd roll with it, and was just like "OK, carry on" and then got the hell out of there.

Not thirty seconds after I'd left the building, the cops rolled up and went in. This was because of my biggest mistake: failing to check the door I entered the building through for contact sensors. There were some, and I tripped them.

But they didn't see me exit, so didn't question me! Definitely some good lessons there though.
