Hey everybody, I'm working on a Photo Book project all about abandoned buildings in New England. Check out my crowd funding page, contribute if you can and share with people you know! Thanks!

3 months a member, 3 posts... And here I was thinking we get to know one another a bit better before we start asking for money.

So you're 14 and asking for $3000 for the equipment you need and gas money? Try earning your way like everyone else.

Kid,
1) Figure out where you're going first.
2) Can you even drive?
3) You should honestly just stick to taking pictures with your phone and posting them to Instagram, Facebook and etc. Your project probably won't even get as much visibility as Pabstman's Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/pabstman/) and he probably mostly relies on public transit. Get on his level first. Then think about books and whatever.
4) Save, take on odd jobs, or something, but I'm not sure this is the right place to solicit funds. It'll take time, sure, but many of us have had to do it.
5) There are other things a 14 year old can do to feel accomplished.

Oh goodness...

Look, I was where you were a few years ago. I had no job, no income and I wanted to make something tangible with my photography. So I created two books, for free online. I saved up money from birthdays, chores, Christmas, etc. For a good camera. I got drives from family and other explorers who felt generous.

You cannot come on here and expect people to fund your (honestly not original at all) project. That's not how we work here, at least from what I've seen.

You're still young, so I can't say many explorers on here would risk taking you out (legal issues beyond trespassing), but give it some time and try to make connections. WORK FOR WHAT YOU WANT, don't expect it to be given to you.

As a side note, your $25 donation reward with the free copy of the book isn't going to work, since the book will likely cost more than $25 to produce anyways.

Here's a preview of my two books to give you an idea of what you can accomplish on your own without crowd funding. http://www.blurb.c...r/store/Overlooked

Looks good! Just out of curiosity, did you sell any? I wanted to make a photo book and make it something big (really invest, good theme) a couple of years ago but then realised that it's a bit risky and it probably wouldn't sell enough. Then I thought about settling with Blurb. Is it worth it?

Hey Ann, I used Blurb too: http://www.blurb.c...30-vanishing-lines

Sirpsycho, I think the best way to do Blurb is wait until they have an author purchase special and then buy and sell them yourself. You can hardly do any markup at the one book retail price. I mostly use them for gifts.

This website is my Abandonment Photography book!

It's got thousands of pages containing photographs, history, wisdom, advice, experiences, information... everything you could possibly ever think to need for this hobby. New content is added daily and the "book" never ends. I see astounding photography from around the world every time I peruse this forum and I can even add my own. The social experience behind the images and info is priceless. It's really got it all.
AND IT'S FREE.

I wish you the best of luck with your book. I started exploring the local abandoned insane asylum when I was fourteen and it changed my life. Here I am at age 47 doing the same shit. It's an incredible hobby. If you think your book is going to kick ass now, just wait and see what kind of book you can put out after you graduate and have another half-decade or so experience in your soul. Your skills will grow mad-awesome and when you work hard and save (if you get a part-time gig after school or on weekends), you'll really appreciate your equipment because you sweated and got stressed out for it. Be sure to include some fascinating text with your images and it'll sell better. People like to be entertained with the Full-Monty if they're separating from some cash for something they can get in spades on the retardnet.

A really great example of a magazine-type layout book of abandonment photography can be seen here. Instead of publishing a $40 coffee table hardback, the photographer instead produced a high-quality magazine that was vastly cheaper than a standard hardback. It's also available in an E-Reader format, (Kindle, Nook etc.) which is cool. You're the right age to think about utilizing this technology as it's growing in popularity and will someday surpass paper-books in popularity and access. I have the actual paper copy of Rusty's work and it kicks ass.

Here's a link to the E-Reader options
http://weirdnj.com...dia/forsaken-epub/

Here's the Amazon paper copy with a few reviews http://www.amazon....=1364562243&sr=1-9

I didn't post that to hawk the photographer's work, I don't know him personally. I just wanted to give you some ideas that may influence your own book. There are many ways to approach this and it'd be smart to examine all of your options to custom-tailor your "message" for the optimum impact for the reader. Don't make it dry, show some confidence and explore the literary part of it. You have the concept down but just wait until you start fleshing out the text. Say everything you'd say to your best friend who didn't make the trip. Bring your thoughts during the exploration out and answer your own questions with coinciding historical facts. Do your research and really make it gripping! Grab the reader by the ass like you know them personally! The more time you take, the better the product. Don't rush it but stay focused and as interested in what you're doing as you want the reader to be. It'll be ultimately fulfilling if you add your love to it so don't be lame. Go and kick some ass.

I have also used Blurb: Kings of Madness

I put this together myself when I was unemployed a few years back because I'd done a ton of work on-site at Kings Park and wanted to document what I'd seen and everything. I've sold a whopping two copies of the book, but I learned a ton by creating it.

I'd also throw my lot in with "take more pictures first." There's a lot of amazing photographers on this site and you can learn a LOT on here.

Rusty and Christina also just put out an amazing book: Preserving Greystone.

They set the bar high on this one: great photos, great story, high-quality printing.

My advice if you're keen on printing a book: get a job, buy your camera, use public transportation, and take photos for a few years before going on this journey. In fact, I'd wait until you have some college under your belt. I don't think I had to write more than 15 pages of anything before I was in college. Wait until you have to write a 50-page paper, then decide if this is really something you want to do. Writing a book isn't easy. You should get as much practice as you can before trying to publish something that has your name on it.

That might be more advice than you wanted or asked for, so take it with a grain of salt.

@skatchkins - thanks for the shout out, amigo.

Yep! I've sold a few. My high school bought a copy for their library. The local public library bought a copy and I've sold some to other photographers / explorers.

What I did was order a copy of each for myself, then an additional copy to lend out to people. Then I took orders if people wanted to buy them, and waited for a promotional sale from blurb (up to 30% off) in order to make a profit for myself. It worked out alright. But it's definitely not enough to make a living off of. Just something I did in my free time.
