I'm not new to photography by any means, but I'm just starting out taking photos of my explorations... I was wondering what y'alls favorite lenses are (for urbex or otherwise).

I'll start: mine's the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8. Though it's not the most versatile lens out there, I love composing shots in a wide frame-- and it's killer in low light.

Sigma 10-20mm f3.5

Sigma 30mm f1.4

Both exceptional lenses and the only ones I use exploring.

I never regretted owning any of my L lens. My favorite was the 70-200 f/2.8 IS 2nd gen. It could grab a keeper better than any other lenses even shooting into the setting sun.
Next was the 50L, harder to use but it can grab keepers in low light like no others. Fast AF locks. It be the first prime I get if setting up again.

Currently my two faves are my Sigma ART's, the 35 and the 50, absolutely fantastic glass.

Do you shoot with a full frame or a crop?

The first non-kit lens I ever purchased was a Canon 40mm f2.8 pancake. I was very new to the DSLR world and had a hard time not getting frustrated with this lens. I did not yet know that there was a difference between a cropped sensor and a full frame sensor and that this would effect how a lens behaves on the camera (my camera was cropped - a Rebel T4i). I learned this later and it explained my frustration at the extremely tight feel to this particular lens.

Anyways, I just got the Sony A7Rii about a month ago and this little pancake lens that was so disappointing on the cropped sensor is quickly becoming my go-to lens for a variety of venues and uses. The full frame sensor really changed how I view this little prime - for the better. Another great advantage to this combo is how much smaller and lighter the whole setup is!

I also love that the A7Rii has the option to act as a cropped sensor camera as well, especially since I can't afford to immediately replace my old, incompatible lenses all at once. I'm still using my Tamron 10-26mm wide angle lens (I love, love, love this lens on my Canon T4i and it cost about half the cost of its Canon counterpart).

Sony AR7ii with adaptor:
- Canon EF 40mm f2.8
- Tamron EF-S 10-26mm f3.5

*By the way.., I'm totally open to suggestions on what would be the best (affordable) full frame replacement to my Tamron 10-26mm lens!*

I shoot a full frame 6D. The new ART lenses are not only half the price of Canon L glass, but are sharper and you can get the usb dock to do micro adjustments at home. Oh and did I mention that they have a 7 year warranty compared to Canon's 1 year?

Crop, the Sigma 10-20 isn't compatible with a full frame sadly.

Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. Sharpest wide angle for crop sensors without dropping $3k on the Canon 11-24mm f/4L. I played with the Tokina on a full frame sensor and there was no vignetting at 16mm and correctable vignetting down to about 14mm. For $400, it's an incredibly versatile lens for either format.

I love primes. Get a super fast shutter speed, and you don't need to light a thing.

Just throw on an ND filter if you're EXT.

I'm a cheapskate, and I use a T1I with broken auto focus, so all I have are manual lenses with EOS adapter rings. My everyday carry lens is a Vivitar 24mm f2, and I also bring an Olympus OM Zuiko 50mm f3.5 macro and a Nikkor 50mm f1.4 when I'm out exploring. There's some limitations to these lenses, to be sure (no auto-focus or image stabilization), but they always make me slow down and think more about the shots I take. For scouting, I'm a big fan of my Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f3.5 zoom.

Shopping for a lense? Here's the test source that you wanted. Complete blur charts and reviews for many popular lens.

The user interactive blur charts are great for finding the sweet spot(s) of your lense. Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of a lense makes shooting keepers a lot easier. It also gives alternative lens to the mainstream ones in the reviews. An excellent site for shooters.

Definitely my favorite is my sigma 10-20 f4-5.6. It's super wide and very sharp but I do miss having a few extra stops to go down.

Other than than a nifty fifty is all I use!

Tokina 11-16mm blows the Sigma 10-20mm out of the water. Tokina just came out with I believe an 11-20mm if you need the extra 4mm.

Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 for crop, Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8 for full frame. I shoot Nikon, and these are my go-to lenses for pretty much everything except shooting portraits, where I use a 50mm Nikkor f/1.8.

Try the 50 1.4D sometime. I have the 1.2, 1.4D, and 1.8 and the 1.4D is my favorite

I may have to do that. The 50 is a great focal length, especially for a full frame. I like the 1.8G a lot.
