I'm asking because I'm very careful with my gear and today I went to this place and found a gopro. I went to this place last week and took several pictures in each single room of the building and today I was leaving this building and I saw something on the other corner of the room, I get close and found this gopro. I get home and I knew I took a picture of that room last week so I check the picture, little zoom to that corner where the gopro was and

Don't ask me what place it was and if you know what was on the memory card I can returned to you (Hey... i'm a nice guy)

Take pictures and leave only foot prints...
The police department is the best bet next to leaving it there for it's owner to find.
As best I know UER does -not- have a lost and found department. Nor should it.

I'm not looking for the owner. I ask this question... Have you been lucky to find any kind of stuff in your explorations ?
If the owner is around here HEY I don't mind to return it but I'm not looking for him or her.

I would have left it there. Someone else's misfortune is not the kind of luck I would want. Taking things while trespassing can easily elevate it to a more serious crime; it's a liability and not why I explore.
How would you feel if you had been the one to misplace it?
Worse, how do you know it's not stolen?
&
pics or it never happened:P

I found this, and released him...

As others have said, I would have left the gopro. If I forgot some gear in an explore, I would hope that other urbexers would leave it there with the hope that I would come back for it. Gear costs money, and while it would always be nice to have some more, you've got to remember that someone else paid for the camera you find on the ground.

To answer your original question though, I always find cool stuff. That's the joy of exploration. My favorite part of doing this is that I get a glimpse into the life of a building, and objects found inside are just pieces to that puzzle. Always follow the 'take only pictures, leave only footprints' rule, because if you take something cool or interesting from a site you're only robbing another explorer of the experience you had there...

I recently found an incredible flashlight (later learned that it was about $60) in an old house from 1933 in Muskoka.

I've found stuff like that on occasion before... the sort of thing that you know is not a part of the location originally.

Generally, I'll take it but leave a prominent note detailing that I have it, and an e-mail address that cannot be linked to me personally (vadalton [at] safe-mail.net). My rationale here is that especially for something like a gopro, if I don't take it the next person who comes along will, and probably won't make any effort to return it.

Of course, if the item looks to be a part of the location originally, I won't touch it.

We recently found a litter of puppies and decided that it was in the puppies best interests to take them from the property. Two of my friends that were there with me took them home for the evening. Sadly, one puppy, which had been sickly from when we first discovered them, died hours after we found them. Two others were liberated from the main group by an emaciated and frightened mother. Fortunately, we were able to place all of the others in homes within 24 hours (it was a huge litter - like 8 puppies, I think).
Anyways, my long-winded point to the puppy story was that this was the only time I can remember actually "taking" something pretty cool from a location. Every rule has an exception, I suppose.

I've found tons of things, and I'd be lying if I said there wasn't that moment's hesitation before I put whatever it was back in its spot on that dusty shelf and left it where it was found. This is particularly difficult to do when I know the next person that finds that same item will likely pocket it without a second thought. This irritates the hell out of me, but that's how it goes.

What?! No more full membership for you!

Just kidding, but imagine if we were that strictly idiotic here.

This seems like a sensible rule that would allow room for recovering lost equipment and animals. If I were in the situation of the OP, I would probably take the camera, and use its content to figure out who dropped it, and depending on that return it. Would probably be a good story to tell, which to me is more valuable than illegitimately gotten equipment.

My buddy just found a jar of herbals in a "tougher to reach" spot in an abandoned mine. It may have been a surprise for whoever conquered the passageway, or maybe they just dropped it, trying not to die on the way back down. We'll never know which it was, but we do know it was good quality stuff. ;]

I've found a vintage tin of Quaker State wheel bearing grease along with a bunch of pre-WW2 documents.

Gear, tripods, pieces of tripods, you name it. I leave it. I would hope that someone would do the same if I were in the same boat. My luck doesn't work that way, but I'll never lose hope. Ha.

Once, I even used a tripod that someone had left because I didn't have mine. It was very nice of them. Put it back where I found it and went on my way.

However, I did meet this little fella named Douglas...and oddly enough, he shows up at every place I explore now. So weird.

I admire your honesty. I think most people on this forum would end up taking it in real life - they just won't admit it here or like to think of themselves as the sort of person who wouldn't take it.

I actually had a situation play out once where I ended the day loading my car full of stuff. Let me back up and explain myself here, it's legit...honest.

I had driven by this house near where I live for weeks, maybe months, with the thought of "that looks abandoned" every time. Finally, it got to me...I snapped...I had to know. So, one misty and cool morning I just drove up to it and started poking around to see what was up. It certainly looked abandoned, felt abandoned...but I gave the cursory "Hello!?!?" a few times and then walked right in. The place was in pretty good shape for having been exposed to elements for a while, but was an absolute mess. So many things were still in it that I thought someone might still live there, until I completed the full explore and found nothing. Also, the open fridge with rotting food was a pretty good clue.

I left the place, curiosity satisfied, and decided I would come back later for a more thorough sweep. When I got home I called my wife and told her about it and she thought I was crazy and didn't want me going back up there alone. I'm clumsy, I'll admit...but have never been hurt on an explore (minus some wasp stings). But, as married guys know, you sometimes say "sure" and just chalk it up to the best agreement you'll get from the spouse to do these things.

That afternoon my wife called me on her way home from work and said "I think that house you were talking about is being demolished. I'm driving by and there's all kinds of equipment there and the porch is gone." Shit. I told her was going back up there to see if it was true. And, yes...there it was...getting smashed up. The demolition contractor came up to me and I asked him if they were doing a full tear down, which they were. I told him that I was hoping to look around there and he said "Help yourself. Don't get hurt. and don't take anything from that pile *pointed to a stack of stuff*, but you can have anything else you want. We're done for today. It'll be down completely on Monday (this was a Friday)."

That was it...I had permission to be there. Not only that, but if anything caught my eye...I could just take it home. I didn't even bother with pictures of the place, my priorities shifted: Save The Stuff. I spent that night and part of Saturday dismantling doors and other architecturally significant stuff. I pulled down a cedar wall plank by plank that I ended up giving a friend so she could put it back up in her house.

The moral of the story is that, yes...I took stuff from a place to keep it from being reduced to rubble. And though I haven't done much with any of it, other than keep it in my garage for now, I feel better about not letting it get bulldozed. I'd do it again, given the opportunity...which seems pretty rare.

The few times I've talked to people before going into a building with permission, I've put the info right up front that I'm not there to strip copper or anything. I even have a "Release of Liability" waiver that I can pop out and sign, should they have any reservations about letting me in semi-unsafe places. This way, they know my full intentions going in and don't worry about me cleaning them out.

So...yeah. It's a long story to say that I have found and taken stuff because of a strange circumstance coupled with good timing and weird luck.
