Nikon D3200...my first non-point and shoot camera. Have already invested in lenses totaling more than twice the cost of the camera and have only had it for like 13 months. Doesn't have exposure bracketing which sucks and has me contemplating a baby step up to a D3300 in the very near future.

D3300 user here, it does not have exposure bracketing unfortunately.

Really? I was told it did! Glad I didn't pull the trigger and order a used body off of KEH like I've been tempted to. REALLY want exposure bracketing for HDR and my tendency to take indoor pictures at noon with big windows that are washed out as shit and hard to fix in photoshop. Ha ha ha.

You would never even need that "feature". Just take three of the exact same photo at different shutter speed, aperture, or ISO. It's as simple as that.

I love my bracketing function on my D5500. Yes you can change those settings manually. but then you run the risk of accidently moving the camera and then the shots wont line up properly in post.

True, but 'Auto-Align Layers' in Photoshop fixes all of that.

Wanna go full-frame sometime in the future. I barely even pick up my camera much these days, let alone go exploring.

sony a-33 with a minolta-konica lens, spare is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-DS-7

the minolta lens has two spots on it in bright light condition

the Panasonic point and shoot has spottage on an inner lens, terrible in bright light and poor video recording

i am so glad i made the jump to raw images, really gives my 11 dollar lens a boost

I also bring a Canon PowerShot SX280 HS point and shoot just in case. Had the SX230 which was amazing and lost it...the 280 has a glitch where any time you take video it registers as your battery is almost dead and shuts down But nice having a 20x zoom on a good low light camera in your pocket as a backup and perfect for bringing to sport events and concerts that don't allow "professional" cameras.

People get so hung up over that. I haven't handled that particular PowerShot but you can most likely override and control every setting manually. It's having the capability and venturing outside the "AUTO" that makes it a non-point and shoot.

It's an intentional omission so people feel they've got to buy something above the entry model. Entry level DSLRs are disappointingly lacking in features for those coming from higher end permanent lens cameras(i am purposely ignoring silly marketing categories here).

Any Nikon DX format people who want to step up from the 3xxx series, you might want to consider the D7100. You can pick up a used body for under $600 (about the same as a new D3300) and it's a solid DX format camera with a good feature set (it does bracketing, good auto-focus options, shoots RAW, etc).

I don't have personal experience with the 7100, but I use the 7000 as my backup camera. The 7100 is basically the same, but with a higher resolution and wifi.

If you shop around you can get a refurb D7200 body for less than $800 as well.

I currently use the Nikon D610. I switch between the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED lens and Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED lens.

Another user of the 5DMkII over here. And I use the official battery grip on it, because I'm crazy and decided that the best thing while exploring was an even bigger, heavier camera!

Originally explored with a Powershot A520, and went to a Rebel XSi when I moved into the dSLR world. The Rebel series is great for learning on, but they do have their limitations which is why I moved up to full frame.

Much like Zen, I'm eyeing the 1DX2, and having the 5DMkII transition to being the backup body.

Just be warned that once you go full frame, it's painful to go back, as I discovered when I had to send the 5DMkII in for repairs not that long ago, relegating me back to the XSi.

I use a Pentax K-5. I use a Pentax 1:1 macro 50mm f/2.8, my kit 18-55mm f/3.5, and I have a 55mm Mamiya-Sekor f/1.4 manual lens coming in the mail today that I can't wait to try out.

Canon T3i with a canon 50mm f/1.8 lens and a sigma 18-200 f/3.5 lens. Whole set up probably costed $600, don't need a whole lotta money to take good pics

Wow, people here are crazy about DSLRs. If I were buying a camera solely for urban exploring I would definitely get a mirrorless with an ASPC sized sensor. And if I were buying my first high quality consumer grade camera again, I'd definitely go for mirrorless.

IMO, dslrs are best suited for people using their cameras all the time, sports photographers, budget videographers, and pros. Many people hardly even use their DSLRs a year after they first buy them, just because they don't want to lug them around.

I'm speaking for myself, but I certainly use my camera for a lot more than urban exploring, and it's with me almost constantly. I'm sure a lot of people on here use their cameras outside of urbex, and most probably didn't buy their camera for urbex originally.

Very true. In the context of this forum I was just under the impression people were primarily using them for urban exploring though

*Yawn*
You seem to have a very opinionated and limited view of DSLRs. (unfortunately)

Try maybe branching out a bit. Different strokes for different folks.
Also, I could not give a rat's ass about "mirrorless" cams or any praise you have for it.

In 5-10 years, mirrorless will be seriously taking over. Right now, between the battery life, quality of the evf, etc they are good but not super fantastic. I know several pros that sunk a ton of money into going to the high end Sony A7 series and all of them sold them.

Autofocus is slower in lower light since it's on sensor , electronic viewfinder is okay but not fantastic, etc.

The lenses are solid though. Just needs a couple more years for battery tech and refinement.
