What are some of the excuses you've used when caught by police or security while urbexing?

If ever an officer of the law or any other nosy individual asks you what the white sticker on the bumper of your car that reads "UER" means, just direct them to this website. All suspicion averted. Just saving on energy costs.

Haha, nice decoy. Fortunately, I don't do bumper stickers, so I have nothing to worry about.

I made vehicle magnets with a company/logo I invented. They've worked.
I have matching logo hardhats as well.

I mostly explore active sites behind locked doors, so I have to be a lot more creative!

Usually "I had to use the bathroom and followed someone in" works pretty well. If it's late at night and there wouldn't plausibly be someone entering to follow, "I found a door unlatched".

When it's an abandonment or construction site and I'm behind a fence, I find honesty is the best policy.

"I wanted to photograph broken machinery."

They ID'd us and let us out the front gate--and waved as they drove away. It may have helped that I had a large camera and a tripod. Also that I'm too old to lock up.

When caught near cranes or something, since I work in construction, I usually start telling them about the people who own the cranes. Since I know most of the companies out here...that's worked out pretty well thus far.

Other than that, I got nothing great.

When I was young I once managed to use a decent firecracker to distract police. They were behind the wooden fence surrounding a construction site where we loved to poke around. We had to climb over that fence to escape. We could hear them talk, they decided that a few of them would stay there behind that fence in case we'd climb over it while a few others would drive to the entrance about 500 meters down the street and then run towards us. I happened to have a firecracker in my pocket so after waiting a minute or so, I lit it and threw it as far as I could down the road in the direction of the entrance. Peeked over the wooden fence and chuckled as I saw the cops run towards the spot where the firecracker exploded. At the same time we saw that the other group had entered the site and came running towards us, but our way was clear now to climb over the fence and run to our homes.

I wonder if anyone remembers the pc game Commandos which I was playing a lot back then. As far as I can remember you could throw grenades to distract silly nazis to walk into their base unseen, so that was probably how I got the idea.

I love active infiltration! I've sneaked into more than my fair share of lectures and trade shows that way. It's amazing how easily you can get into most events just by going through the service/catering entrance.

I second this! Active infiltration is about playing the role right and blending in. My favorite is exploring the entire orchestra hall and getting on top of the stage and watching them practice.

That sounds like fun! My personal best is sneaking into the IEEE Show that was in SF a few years ago. I managed to save my boss and I the 900 dollar entry fee per person : )

That would cross my ethical line... sneaking in to something when access itself costs money is more like stealing than exploration.

Ordinarily I would agree. In this circumstance, it was a very overpriced show that shouldn't have had any fee at all. The only reason we would have had to pay was due to the fact that we weren't EE.

I do respect your ethics though. The line gets a lot blurrier with active infiltration.

I understand your reasoning. I've been to a few IEEE conferences in my day (legitimately), and they are damn expensive. The biggest reason I am strict with myself not to think along those lines is that I know if I do it once, the second time will be a lot easier... and it could snowball from there.

Many times pro gear and the right attitude IS a press pass. I've had cops let me have a front row view no questions ask.

I have to respect the resourcefulness and sheer ballsy-ness here! But man, if you didn't manage to get away, you'd be in a lot more trouble.
