A little over a year ago, I posted about a kilometer-long
overpass that was closed for a day. Patience has paid off, and the thing is now closed, to be renovated into Seoul Skygarden, a project influenced by New York's High Line.
On Sunday, it closed to traffic permanently, and I was there.
1. They closed up the ramps, but it doesn't really keep people out.
2. Looks like they were preparing for some sort of upcoming photo op on the overpass.
3. These lights are powered by solar cells, so they could keep going a while.
4. One ramp was already removed, but part of the structure still juts out.
5. Overlooking Seoul Station and the large bus stop out front.
6. All to myself.
7. My office is just up the road over there.
8. The blue sign seems to indicate this place is rotten with road deaths.
9. I found all sorts of life forms under the bridge.
10. Turns out the overpass has bridge rooms. I did not go in. Those birds were perfectly still, either hiding or sleeping with eyes open.
11. At a previous car-free event, students got to colour part of the bridge.
12. Another day, I go back and drive around down below. All these guys have been deployed to direct traffic to the very complicated detour routes.
13. And the VIPs have arrived.
14. I also got to see the South Gate all lit up.
15. Figured I'd come back during a lunch break too.
16. Shortly after taking this, a worker came up one of the ramps. Didn't see the mask, but it was close. He was on a different ramp from me so he just said a few negative words of warning and we both went on our separate ways.
