Figured I'd post here. She has a Canon Rebel T3 EOS and the standard lens has a tight spot in the focus. Won't auto focus anymore and I have no idea what to do about it. Canon wants a small fortune to even look at it. Anyone know of any camera shops near me? Closest large city to me is Pittsburgh PA. Thanks.

Local camera shops are rare nowadays. If it's just the kit lens you might want to consider just buying a new one or a used one in good shape. I got dirt inside my rebel kit lens. I couldn't find anywhere to clean it other than wolf camera and they wanted me to give them a non refundable payment of $40 to send it in. They said if they have to open it to clean it it would be upwards of $100 but they couldn't tell me how much until they looked at it. A new one is $200 so I just went with that.

I just sold my practically new one for $60. 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 IS. People who already have their preferred lens often dump the kit lens that came with their new body. One in great shape should be around $75 shipped on eBay or a bit less CL. Local is preferred so you can try it out. Pawn shop might cost a bit more, but its a good way to try before you buy. Make sure you introduce some vibration and take some shots with and without IS enabled to verify proper, consistent IS working.

CCS systems have a ton of redeeming qualities. There are issues with both battery life and total shutter actuation, but they're still a handy alternative to lugging out the DSLR all the time. I wouldn't say ditch the DSLR, but maybe supplement your gear with a mirrorless body that takes your existing lenses?

Has she ever used manual focus without turning off the AF toggle?
