Post Apocalyptic Me

I needed a challenging creative outlet to keep my obsessiveness occupied for a while. I figured this would go pretty well with my photography and abandoned places interests.

I rummaged through a few friends' junk piles and hit up some Goodwill and Savers. Once I had a pile of discard to work with, I went to work assembling using mostly saved rusty bolts and some rivets. From time to time, I'd find some trash out in the desert or behind an abandoned home or a piece of interesting scrap metal at some industrial relic or alleyway. Once it all came together to my liking, I took it outside and painted and dirted it, painted and, dirted it, again and a again.

I took it out on black Friday and gave it a test run with my wife running the camera button. Back at home I processed some more bleakly than others in keeping with the theme. I'm looking forward to taking it out more to other locations soon and I'm halfway done with the outfit for her.

For the interested.

I distressed everything using anything from a razor blade, serrated knife, hole saw, and dragging behind my vehicle.

The base was a set of football shoulder pads I took all the way apart. The vest is what used to be a nice $5 Savers jacket.
I busted up some 30rd magazines for additional armor. used a cut up motorcycled tire, then figured out a way to use some WWII suspenders to secure it all to me from front to back and into the belt loops. Also on front, bullet casings wired into the tire, belt used for securing vest with horse tackle buckles. Ends are ammo magazine ends and metal model train parts. Model train wheels also integrated into armor piece.

Respirator modified with my dead grandfather's auto shop A/C lines/gauges. Gauges removed and holders used as filters (filled with pillow stuffing and charcoal and removable so they actually work. Various other items added to it like axle ID tag, handlebar race, and old camera strap.

Back has a breather made from an inside vacuum part and car shifter boot. Model train piece added to side, spark plugs from grandfather's tractor. Found metal spike piece rotates down if need be.

Vacuum hose mounted with radiator hose clamps, waterproof storage (headlamp battery case), hooks and wire, and tow strap at bottom hooks into belt loop with linch pin.

Found alleyway chain added mounted with atv winch hook to a Jeep windshield footman loop. Other end drops into collection bag

Pants got tactical vest pieces added along with more suspender parts. Gaiters made from vest pieces and horse buckles. Belt made from canteen strap found at goodwill. Metal stirrer pieces (stars) from industrial plant explore. Buckle made from drain piece, timing gear, and revolver piece I found in the woods as a kid.

Boots are pretty comfortable from Goodwill. Roughed them up and added a piece metal from a masterlock piece I found. Road flares found in a dumpster.

That's it, hopefully you got some entertainment out of my nerdery.

That's absolute genius! Might be a problem getting through the airport metal detector, but damn that's fun project. I don't know what the movie is but I can't wait to see it.

Thank you very much.
It doesn't weigh much at all even with the chain.

These are fantastic! I love this kind of shit and have been wanting to do this myself for a while now.

You should definitely look into going to Wastelander's Weekend in September. You'll fit right in.

Thanks!
The thought crossed my mind. I like the feel of the solo (or partner) explore feel better though. Plus I'm not sure how well a socially anxious introvert would fit in there. We'll see for next year's.

If you haven't looked him up yet, look up Nuclear Snail. Dmitri has some awesome stuff and tutorials.

After shooting the King of the Hammers offroad race in the desert for a week, we made our way back towards home. I was able to check out a few places I had marked on my explore map and figured why not suit up while doing it. My friend Alan followed me around as I went. Here's just a few shots of his many.

And of course

I'm pleased that it wasn't uncomfortable to hike around for a while in. Good to know for future trips. Also the colder weather setup and hood worked well.

I'm a creative nerd but I can murder you with my eyes.

Been playing Fallout 4 for a few weeks, and I've thought about your pics on a number of occasions. You nailed it! But you don't need to be told that. You know you did, for sure.
