On the edge of a small, unincorporated community in north-central Ohio sits a two-story abandoned house. The property is overgrown and the structural integrity of the house is questionable at best. Despite it's heavy deterioration, it is still full of furniture, clothing and other belongings of a family who, in all likelihood, hasn't stepped foot in their house since the late sixties.

1. The old wooden house partially shrouded by untended vegetation.

2. Blue tile still lined the walls in the kitchen where we found an old sink.

3. An old icebox sat open in the corner of what was probably a dining room.

4. In the living room, cushions have escaped the maroon couch.

5. A collapse has heavily slanted the floors in the living room and family room and pitched most of their contents to the bottom of the collapse.

6. The smaller family room in much the same condition.

7. Victims of the collapse include a piano and television set.

8. There was one bedroom on the first floor that included a faded chair spilling some stuffing.

9. Clothing still hung on hooks in several bedroom closets.

10. One of the second floor bedrooms. There was another old TV set in here completely devoid of a screen or innards.

11. There were four bedrooms in the house, three on the second floor. This was the master where there were also several baskets filled with clothing.

12. An old ad for dresses was found among the debris in the master bedroom. It seems that an ad for "gay jackets" appeared on the next page.

13. In the upstairs hallway were several old Sears catalogs. This was fall and winter 1966.

14. Spring and summer 1969.

Thanks! Judging by the exterior, I was definitely not expecting the inside to be that awesome. Guess that's why I always check.

I love places like this. A few years ago I came across an older mobile home in northern MI that had been vacated. It clearly hadn't been inhabited for years, but everything was still there--TV, furniture, dishes, clothes, receipts, financial records, etc. There was a trashed 1st gen Dodge Caravan out back. We found a high school diploma, a small photo album containing only fuzzy polaroids of cats, and a 2004 calendar on the wall, among other things. Pretty neat when you find clues about the people who were there and when they lived there. That kind of stuff is my favorite part of exploring.

I've been in abandoned houses with similar such belongings left behind. It is as if the husband and wife had a dialogue along these lines:

Husband: "Honey, I was thinking we should abandon the house today!"

Wife: "That's a GREAT idea, dear! Let's do it right now!!"

Husband: "I'll tell the kids to grab their toys, you start moving the furniture, and I'll..."

Wife: "Oh no, that would spoil the FUN of it all! Let's just take whatever cash we have on hand, jump in the car and leave!"

Husband: "Better yet, let's leave the car behind too!!"

Wife: "Now you're thinking, dear!!"

Seriously, I used to think this was due to people getting evicted, yet even then people tend to at least take their photo albums, clothing and other bare minimum items. Even IF a landlord illegally evicted them on the spot and changed the locks, it wouldn't make sense for him/her to then abandon the property him/
herself.
I'm stumped and finds like these only deepen the mystery...

I REALLY enjoyed this house and the things left behind. My grandmother had a sink like that. Im almost positive she had the same Sears Catalogs and the some of those patterns. Funny how many memories were unlocked in my mind from viewing this thread. Thanks for posting this!

Thanks for the comments everybody! I think in this particular case, the house was owned by an elderly woman who passed away and nobody cleaned up afterward. There was quite a bit of clothing hanging in various places around the house and all of it was women's. You can also see an old rusty walker in picture #9. I didn't find any photos, letters or anything that would provide any names. Also, I tried to get the address using Google maps and it just says 4xxx-4xxx Ohio xxx, so I don't know what the actual address is to check property records.

Neat shots! I especially love the way the twigs encircle the ad for the ladies clothes... so sad to see that piano get lost with the cave in!
