I was just reading an article about the Navy Yard. The governor is pushing development down there which got me thinking I would like to check out what is left to see. Can anyone tell me how tough it would be to walk around down there without getting thrown into jail? Are there a lot of guards? Is it even worth the effort?

Those apartments blew anyway. Just your average, run-of-the-mill drywall and stucco junk atrocities with no features or actual architectural worth.
What you want is the multitude of 50-100+ year old buildings on-site and of course, the moth-balled cruisers and destroyers. Lots of government Navy buildings and heavy industrial, plus classic brick and limestone administrative stuff. America's Naval military history played an important part in this area of South Philly and documenting the past is there for the taking if you so desire.

Completely agree. Spent an evening there not terribly long before they were demo'd and it was not worth the long hike through the brush it took to get to them.

There are lots of vacant buildings on site and most go back to WWII and beyond in age. Some are sealed up tight and others are pretty easy to get into.

You need to watch yourself because they have some pretty layered security between the PPD, DoD Police, Naval Police, and then private security. However the campus as Ed pointed out it very open, especially now, and getting more publicly accessible as the years go on. Last time I was there some retarded iron-worker stopped me and accused me of being a terrorist for taking pictures of some old machine shop building which was a pain in the ass, but that was more near where they still do shipbuilding.

In my personal opinion from what I have seen there everything is almost 100% gutted and cleaned out. Some of it is neat but the real gem is the exteriors of the WWI era and older buildings down there coupled with just how near military posts are in that they were essentially self contained cities. If you get in some its cool, but you are not missing much if you don't.

My .02 cents.
