It's Grim Up North

Last weekend I embarked on the biggest (as in most miles covered) roadtrip I have done on home soil, heading seven hours drive northwards into the lower reaches of Scotland and later the far north of England. The trip was planned by two friends whilst I was in America which meant for once I had minimal planning input, a nice change from the usual me organising everything.

Whilst it didn't turn into the most fruitful in terms of epic explores, we managed to hit six spots over the weekend and averaged the same number of fails. I have already posted up the biggest place from the weekend separately, and this is a compilation of the rest.

The weekend began the morning after our long drive to Scotland, in the dark, cold and pouring rain stood outside the most beautiful asylum I have ever seen. Seeing the twin towers looming up out of the darkness was incredibly unsettling, and so after finding the way in we left to get some breakfast and wait for light to break enough so we could see where we were going without falling over too much. Sadly what is left and unconverted is little more than a shell with no floors, or anything really - and in the dark gloom of the early morning we missed the way up into the main hall which is by far the best part and only really good bit apart from the outside. Externally it is by far the most amazing looking asylum in the UK in my opinion, and I'd have loved to see it when it was all still there.

First photo is a crappy phone photo as I didn't want to keep my camera out in the pouring rain.

This chapel was once part of a large manor house-turned care home which now sits largely demolished with the remaining wings in a perilous state. Luckily the chapel is still in a sound state so we mainly focused our efforts on that.

Coming back south we attempted to find access into a cinema that popped up recently, but not finding anything we instead explored the old Masonic lodge next door - sadly the only real sign of it's former use is in the window on the staircase which is the shot I wanted to get. Other than that, it is empty and full of pigeons and their mess.

The final spot while heading home was a chapel I had previously failed at three times - just my luck that it had always been sealed when I was passing. Thankfully this time the curse was broken and I got in - and it didn't disappoint.

Well you know, America, Scotland, northern England, all in a days work!

I am a whisker away from reaching my goal of 100 explores in a year now which is what the year has been all about for me. I guess I have just got lucky with the places I have been.

I've been a "lurking fan" of yours for a few months now. You guys in Europe are so fortunate to have locations like this. If something over here across the pond is 150 years old it's a tourist attraction. For you guys it's a Tuesday. You do real justice to these places with your photography.

Next year how about 365 sites in one year! Keep up the great work!

Great work, I love the scale of these shots, shows how expansive the location is. And as much as i hate graffiti in the majority of the locations I shoot, the pattern through the door in 3 is really quite beautiful and adds to the shot. Fantastic shots
