It sounds classier if you pronounce it "tray-passing"

Just did some reading on tubifex worms (here, for the unfamiliar)

and it got me wondering what other strange creatures call the drains & sewers home. What kind of wildlife have you encountered underground?

Not exactly the same, but I popped open a manhole cover in the woods in North Jersey and unleashed the largest spider I've ever seen in my life. Turns out it was a female fishing spider. My girlfriend, who is a vet tech, said she saw it and thought it was an exotic pet...

Like this? I frequently find them near the river behind my house.

Down by the old dam me and Dad used to fish at, those things are all over the fucking place. They hop from boulder to boulder and it's disconcerting to say the least.

God is perfect, but if there is one thing that I'd count as his mistake it'd be spiders.

That looks like her! Except this one was probably the size of your entire finger. Not that big in the grand scheme of things, but for a spider it's a little bit sketchy.

Lot of worms, mostly. An occasional spider, crawfish or bat.
The only place i've seen cockroaches or rats thus far was in MSP.
Nothing too crazy yet!

Ran into a deranged groundhog in the basement of a old hotel over the summer. This thing was certainly not afraid of us and extremely pissed off about us being in his home.

I had some friends that were exchange students from Taiwan and they thought opossums were the most adorable things. Me and my friend, being the killjoys we are, were like "No NO NO, you have to see these things TEETH." They don't like opossums anymore LOL.

Back on track for the post, I have come across rooms in storm drains that have water skitters (I don't know what they are actually called), algae, little minnows. It's really cool.

Overturning giant rocks in the calf-deep "rapids" of the creek in back of my parent's house, I frequently had to peel these slimy bastards off my hands in my relentless pursuit of crawdads.

Geez, this is a gross thread.
I'm not a big fan of the opossum, but did get this shot of two of them in my neighbor's backyard a few years ago.
Not nearly as disgusting as the one my youngest pup brought in the house a few months ago.

All the leaches I've seen were smooth. What's with the ridges?
Leaches are generally found in stagnant water, not running.
What is that ugly bastard?

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.
