Anyone ever photograph Davids Island before everything was totally demolished?

Thanks man, it was on my list for quite some time too. Definitely one of the greatest exploring trips I've been on so far.

I know somewhere in Orlando, FL there is a disney park called "Discovery Island" the Island is now closed and has been for about 15 years. It was a zoo themed park. I believe to get there you have to swim or take a boat or something.

I just got back from an abandoned island. There were originally three settlements on it, two of those have been mostly demolished by now, but one is pretty much intact. Some houses almost look they're still inhabited.

There is a caretaker that comes by to take care of a church, but beyond that you have an entire island all to yourself.

I'll probably make a fuller post somewhere once I sort through the pictures.

Because I can see the one I think you're talking about from the end of my street, and I've paddled out to Hoffman, and there's pretty much nothing left on Swinburne. Before hurricane Sandy, there were shells of a few Quonset huts but that's about it, but most of what was left got flattened by the storm.

That's cool as hell that you made it there though - I've always wanted to do so but need to get a kayak.

Technically, I guess it would have to have been occupied at one time to be truly "abandoned", but I've found and explored an island about 2 acres in size. It is located where a river widens and forms a lake. Not exactly "urban" exploration, but I have a particular fondness for wildernessy spots in urban areas.

Naturally there are loads of abandoned islands in RI. But believe it or not, I live on an island and don't know anyone with a boat. Any sea worthy New Englanders care to meet up?

When I was in college many years ago at Ohio U., I explored Mustapha Island in the Ohio River, downstream from Marietta, OH. Wasn't much there except kind of a picnic area that boaters had made. It wasn't so much abandoned as it was uninhabited. I hope to go back sometime and camp overnight.

I'll throw in Adak, AK! Extremely remote, but totally worth the trip.

One of my first true UE outings was a kayak trip to Fort Gorges in Casco Bay, in Maine. Awesome place, and open to the public, if you can get yourself there.

This was on my list during my family's east coast trip, but my brothers were being dicks, so we didn't end up going. Maybe next time!

Nice! Never been to Adak, but Kiska was nice. Not much in the way of buildings, just a pier mostly, but some great shipwrecks on the beach and some other wrecked WWII machinery and some artillery scattered about. Dutch Harbor still has a bunch of pillboxes on the beach as well, or they did when I was last there 15 years or so ago.

That sounds awesome nonetheless! Adak is pretty incredible. It's an abandoned WWII and Cold War era military base with derelict SOSUS and LORAN stations on it. Plus a nuclear weapons bunker and a lot of munitions storage bunkers scattered across the island.

It's a BITCH to get out there, but absolutely worth it.

Oh wow - I'll have to try to do that this summer! I have family up in Maine and NH that have recommended some cool sites in the past, but this one I haven't heard of before.

Same with Kiska. No one lives on the island, it's in the middle of the chain, and you need special permission to go there now since it's part of the Aleutian Wilderness Area. Still pretty cool, was occupied by the Japanese for awhile during WW2.

Now I just need to find an excuse to go to Adak.

Definitely hit up NH. I can help if need be. There's the usual fortifications on the coast everyone knows about, but also some other cool places too, below the radar. Isles of Shoals has some cool stuff, not necessarily abandoned (though some might be) but just a neat location (island, photogenic, ex-cold-war and military/CG installation, etc.)
