Some of the islands are pretty unremarkable but I like the first one in Daksa. Has anyone explored an island before?

I feel like it would be pretty cool to explore the entirety of a place for once, instead of finding the boundaries of other properties. Get 100% completion for my achievement whoring you know.

It was a pretty cool experience. It's made me want to get back out in the kayak to find another island to explore.

I have been dying to explore long island MA. I don't think I'll ever get the chance though. Between how recently abandoned it was and how hard to get to it is, I imagine it's fairly untouched.

Thats a damn shame. I'd still love to get out there, but I have no way of doing so.

Are you referring to the one up in the 1000 Islands area? I've been there, it's a neat place, but given how tourist-y it is, I wouldn't exactly call it "abandoned".

No. It's not abandoned because the NYC dept of corrections use it for grave sites.

Long Island, MA may just have its own Wikipedia page. And on this page it just might list all of the buildings on the island along with their current occupancy status. This is pure speculation on my part however. I wouldn't want anyone to get the wrong idea that I'm encouraging criminal activity...

As far as Hart Island is concerned, strictly speaking Rinzler is correct. It's used by NYC for "city burial", i.e. Indigent and unclaimed bodies. It is the largest cemetery in the world and is growing.

The place has a ton of history, from what I've seen some great buildings, and it's pretty off limits. Once a month there is a ferry that goes there for the general public but you have to get permission from the department of corrections. I have a friend up there who is a cop and into Urbex. Maybe he can pull, some strings for me next time I'm up that way ;)

I've done my research on it too, but as far as I know special permission is required to gain access. I haven't really looked at their security, though I've read they have some. I didn't look past that, because I don't have contacts to get there or a boat.

There's an island on a lake near me that used to have a big house on it

The house is long gone, and probably nothing remains. A couple years ago there was a fire on it, so it's really just a flat patch of land now, nothing to explore

Cramond Island is the only one that comes to mind for me. World War II ruins on a tidal island just outside of Edinburgh.

Some of the other islands like Inchmickery looked way more interesting though.

Hoffman Island is so much larger but there's three times the buildings on Swinburne.

Is there another Swinburne I don't know about? Because I can see the one I think you're talking about from the end of my street, and I've paddled out to Hoffman, and there's pretty much nothing left on Swinburne. Before hurricane Sandy, there were shells of a few Quonset huts but that's about it, but most of what was left got flattened by the storm.

There's Shooters Island off the north-west coast of Staten Island that looks like it has some structures left from the big shipyard that used to be located there but I haven't had the chance to bring my kayak out there to scope it out.

Gotta say I'm pretty jealous dude! I have wanted to explore that island ever since I saw it on a episode of Life After People on History Channel. Awesome shots you got there to!

The ultimate to me would have been Ellis Island in the late 70s early 80s.
