Recommended action
The City of Hot Springs is currently in the process of acquiring the former Majestic Hotel site and is working with both the U.S Environmental Protection Agency and the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality for technical assistance and funding remediation and cleanup of the site. The acquisition of adjacent vacant properties, if feasible, could increase the economic potential and the prominence of the site’s redevelopment. Prior to demolition, the City of Hot Springs should salvage architecturally significant elements of the building, such as the metal letters forming the rooftop sign, urns, fireplaces, and light fixtures. These elements should be stored for re-use in the redevelopment of the site as a reference to the significance of one of downtown’s lost jewels.
