Went and checked this out the other day. Figured I'd add to this thread instead of starting a new one. It's really a beautiful building, much more colorful than we were expecting.

There was a group filming and we heard others entering as we left. We stayed out of sight and didn't talk to anyone though.

Did you know there are others? We went and checked out another one in Sterling last weekend. Super interesting building, the workshops and such were more or less untouched while the main area was completely and utterly trashed. Seems like Great Western Sugar came through and violently scrapped the place for a lot of the heavy machinery while leaving everything else intact. Only a handful of tags in the whole place and not even a fence to keep people out.

Yup. There were 10 in total, Longmont, Loveland, Sterling & Brighton are still standing. Windsor, Eaton, Brush, Greeley & Fort Collins have all been partially or completely demolished. Fort Morgan is still in operation.

As a bonus we passed the operational Fort Morgan plant on the way to Sterling.

Edit: There were 10 mills actually, I forgot about Brush.

Those are some awesome photos. It's a shame about Eaton, wish I could have gotten in there before the demolition.

6panther and I went and checked out the last two mills, Loveland and Brighton last weekend.

The Loveland mill is really, really cool. Seems like there have been some explosions there in the past? They've also taken some pretty extensive measures to keep people out. Doors are welded, locked and stuff is piled up on the backside of a lot of them. Somebody even took the effort to use plywood to make any climbing routes significantly more difficult / dangerous. Luckily the grounds are really awesome on their own. I want to go back. With a grappling hook.











There are also a few incredibly colorful trains there.

That's cool that you got into the Sterling factory. Did you encounter any resistance from workers? I believe the site is still used for storage and as a beet dump.

My dad actually worked for Great Western and then later Western Sugar in the 80's and 90's. He was a loader operator. I remember as a kid sitting on his lap and steering the loader around and around the beet pile in-between truck arrivals. And running around the off loading ramp outside the Morgan factory, a 6 foot deep pit with water in it carrying the beets inside. I guess safety wasn't as strictly enforced then.

Anyway there is also another sugar factory near the Nebraska border in the little town of Ovid. I've been by at work several times but always get eyeballed by the workers at the still active silo.

You're in for a real treat! I've road tripped through Colorado twice in 2015 to check out the abandoned places. There are so many awesome ones to check out.
