Good story. Glad some of these places are being repurposed.

I was surprised at how legit this was. I figured the news would have made this story much more about how shady some of these places are, how they are breeding grounds for crime and vandalism, or something else along those lines. It was refreshing to see UE locations acknowledged as something more than the stereotypes listed above in mainstream media.

Thanks for sharing.

Yeah I agree. It was a pretty sympathetic piece and im glad they found someone who was older, mature and well spoken to interview. He represented the community quite well and did a great job of articulating why we do what we do.

Lol @ older and mature. Clearly you don't know this person then. I'm shocked he didn't say there was a huge fire in the 80s and almost everybody burned to death.

After reading the comments, and without clicking the link, i'm guessing it's the doucher, Seph Ball-less.

Ran across this news story this morning. Not a mall but our neighbors to the north have some new 'splorin' opportunities!

Interesting. I forgot about all those closed Target's up in Canada. Maybe someone should start photographing abandoned K-Marts. There are quite a few around my area.

^Them and Sears - the former has completely dropped-dead in my area, the closest ones are up in Kenosha or within Chicago city limits, now. How the parent company still exists beats me, they've invested the absolute bare minimum in their stores since Kmart bought Sears over a decade ago and are suffering from it.

We had an abandoned K-Mart in Appleton for quite some time. I remember shopping there as a kid and then seeing it decay over the years. Never explored it, but it's now a huge abandoned lot.

We still have a Sears in the mall, though.

There's one on my route to work that closed in the 2002-wave of bankruptcy and has been mothballed ever since. The roof leaks so much it looks like an emporium of kiddie pools and plastic buckets inside, and oddly the lights are still on.

I did get into a long-vacant one near Gary a few years ago; it shut down just before the whole "Big Kmart" phase. Corporate doesn't really leave much behind but if you're really into old retail and stuff you'll usually find something to make it interesting.

I've wondered the same thing. Our local-ish one looks like a ghost town.

Good report overall, regardless of Seph. I'm fascinated by the decline of malls, especially with half the malls in my area either abandoned or already demolished.

Well, it's just a big, empty, overgrown parking lot now. Not really much to see.

Is that the one right over by St. Vinny's sort of? If so I've seen that large lot....always wondered what used to be there.

Still would love to check out the inside of the old Walgreens? building near there. It has been vacant for almost 7+ years to my knowledge.

Also, just was reading a forum online where they talked about how supposedly no new enclosed malls have been built in the United States since 2006? I'm sure that date is off by a few years but I suppose there could be truth to it.
