My boys and I were feeling bores, so we decided to hit up a spot I had on my radar for awhile. There were a couple of pic in google earth that showed this tower falling in, so I wanted to get up there before it got too bad. Unfortunately, the roof over the observation deck had fallen off. In the pics, you can see it sitting to the side of the main tower. It was a fun trip all in all. According to the USGS tag, the spot was from 1942.

Cool!

Good lord that's a tall tripod! Nice set! Not much left, but it looks like a nice way to kill an afternoon.

Ha! Thanks. The tripod is an old Gitzo Studex from the 70s. It belonged to Joseph Schwartz, who was a locally famous "folk photographer", involved in early civil rights work. It extends to 7 feet tall once the camera is on it. It weighs as much as a car, but it's rock solid once setup. My boys and I are always joking that we can setup a teepee with it if we ever get stranded.

The site was totally empty, but from what I've seen, that's the way some of the towers were run. There is another fallen in building about half a mile away, so I think that's where the living facilities were at.

There used to be guy wires and turnbuckles holding up the whole building from the corners, but it looks like the roof collapse took them out. It won't be there much longer, so I wanted to get some pics before it got too bad.
