Hope this wasn't a member here

COLUMBUS, Ohio - An investigation is underway into the death of a man who fell several floors to his death Tuesday morning. The incident occurred at the vacant Ohio Light Plant on the 500 block of West Nationwide Boulevard.

Police tell 10TV two adults and a teenage girl used a conveyer belt to gain entry into the abandoned building that is filled with live wires and old equipment.

Police say they received a call around 1:00 a.m. from 17-year-old Abigail Faught, who explained that her brother - 20-year-old Frank Faught - was in an accident in the building that they had illegally gained entry into. Police tell 10TV Frank was trying to climb platform-to-platform near a stairwell when he lost his grip and fell several floors.

By time police and medics arrived, the man had died. They say he may have been electrocuted before falling.

The coroner’s office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death, which police are treating as an accident.

Abigail Faught and another man who entered the building have been charged with criminal trespassing.

Edit - I'm Canadian and didn't realize Ohio was "Great Lakes"

Reminds me of a post I read on here about someone walking through a building, hearing a buzzing noise, before finding out it was live wires.

Interestingly enough, I was in Columbus just 3 weekends ago for a small press convention and wound up doing a bit of UE w/ a few of the guys afterward.
R.I.P. to the poor young man and condolences to his family.

If I die while exploring I want to go out in a blaze of glory! Maybe taking out a few taggers and scrappers with me.

And I dont want any condolences, prayers or any of that crap. I want comments like:

"Thank god that douchbag is gone"
"Oh good - no we dont have to listen to his ramblings anymore"
"That guy was an asshole - rot in hell fucker!"

These are the things I want said about me.

So sad. After numerous close calls, it's still so easy to forget that this could happen to any of us.

I always go by one rule when it comes to wires...I treat them like they are live, even if I know they aren't.

I recently found out from two different places that they still had power running to some areas in these abandoned factories.

I had talked to the owner beforehand for one place, but I explored the other many times before meeting the owner and was luckily just careful.

Completely preventable.
Don't climb in the dark unless you know what you're doing. Predawn it and splored with light.
3 points of contact when climbing, always. Take your time.
There is no "if I fall". You fall on steel expect to break bones or die. If you don't feel that it's safe for you to do... DON'T!!!

What's that? A scrapper's little helper? No reason to be mucking with wires while exploring.

It merely detects the presence of electrical current. If you're worried about being caught with it, don't use it. I've seen some tight spaces where contacting bare wires is unavoidable.

Off topic. Falls are the biggest hazard splorers face.

Bare wires can be avoided, just as this fall could have been. No way to know if the circuit will stay dead if no lock out, tag out is in place.
Depending on the voltage that detector will get you cindered.
480 VAC and above, special training, tools and PPE are needed. Many "bare wires are 480 VAC or many KVs above.

I thought you could tell if there's current in a wire by using a compass or something.

But I'll ask some physics professors about it.

I was really thrown years ago when I saw on the news of a dead man on the roof of some hardware store, in Chicago. He was trying to break in. Police thought he was trying to steal copper. Apparently he tried breaking in but the building had electrical security and was electrocuted to death. Can this shit be legal? Damn damn damn..

Isn't the issue here amps, not voltage?

Not exactly. People like to say things like "amps kill, not volts", but this can be misleading. Your skin is a pretty good resistor (if it's dry), and so a relatively high voltage (think of voltage as the penetrating force of the current) is needed to electrocute you. This is why getting shocked by a 700 amp car battery will not kill you, because it only carries ~12 volts.

Yo I'm taking a physics course this semester on electronics.

Asked the professor what's more dangerous, low voltage high amps, or high voltage low amps.

(Voltage before amps, right.).

He said high amps.

Though I'll eventually copy/paste some of this convo and print it out for him.

He said it's easier to detect voltage than to measure current.
