So, this past week I screwed up enough courage to try rooftopping this building:

I've been in it before and know that it has minimal security (a single camera in the entry way to a staircase.) I thought I'd chosen the perfect target until I reached the second floor. I went down one corridor to find a keypad lock, not sure what to do I retraced my steps and went the other way to hit a door that I wasn't sure what was behind (I assume it was a secondary fire escape by the stickers near the door.) I didn't want to set off any fire alarms, and certainly wasn't going to risk police, so I gave up. In retrospect I wish I had been brave enough to open the door, especially since there was no sign saying "Open this door and the alarm will sound". I did manage to take these photo's out of the second floor window:

Should've tried that door! Also I absolutely love those yellow gas pipes like in the second photo; they're pretty easy to climb and have gotten me lots of places I didn't think I'd make it to. They may not be on the building you were looking at, but be on the watch for more like that and try them

Audible door alarms on the roof are actually pretty rare. Even when there is an "Alarm will sound" sign, usually nothing happens. Magnetic sensors that alert security are slightly more common, but can be easily checked for after the door is open if you know what they look like.

But yeah, we've all been there! Best of luck next time! And hey, it wouldn't hurt to set your sights on something a bit taller next time around.

In reply, I wish I had the appropriate meme for this. Alas, I do not have it.

Bummer man, how high was the building?

Keep at it, you'll get there and yes - consider some higher buildings for sure!

Edit - you are a girl, scratch the word "man"

It was only about three stories tall, I only chose it because of its lack of security. I've got a couple of ideas of where I want to go next, as well as pictures of two different abandoned buildings I plan to post soon.

If someone does approach you for opening a door to the stairwell just tell them you're afraid of elevators, it might work.

Can those pipes hold your weight without damage? They've always seemed a bit too flimsy for me to try. If they can, however, that's some pretty useful knowledge.

Those flimsy ones can; I've made 4-storey ascents with the thinner ones (usually grabbing two cause the small ones come in sets) and I'm 210 lbs. Really easy to get up and easier to slide down. They're usually pretty wobbly because they're not bolted down right against the building, but on sort of stand.

I would absolutely not recommend climbing exterior gas lines in all but the most exceptional of circumstances. Not only are the easier ways to gain access to most roofs, but the potential consequences of rupturing a gas line are most unpleasant. I've been on dozens of rooftops and have never needed to climb one. Do as you wish though, I suppose.

Good first try on this explore....as others have said, you probably dont have much to fear from any of the doors, especially on a low-rise commercial building like that. Most door alarm signs are fake and if you're going to run into an alarmed door its likely inside of a high-end hotel or condo building with many people going in and out. Even if you did set off an alarm (never had it happen personally), just casually walk away. It's not illegal to go onto the roof of a building and the worst case scenario is that security asks you to leave, but even that's highly unlikely. Keep at it and be sure to post some photos when you do finally make it up to the top
